Despite the development of a now vast body of knowledge known as modern control theory, and despite some spectacular applications of this theory to practical situations, it is quite clear that much of the theory has yet to find application, and many practical control problems have yet to find a theory which will successfully deal with them. No book of course can remedy the situation at this time. But the aim of this book is to construct one of many bridges that are still required for the student and practicing control engineer between the familiar classical control results and those of modern control theory.

The main aim of this book is to present a unified, systematic description of basic and advanced problems, methods and algorithms of the modern con- trol theory considered as a foundation for the design of computer control and management systems. The scope of the book differs considerably from the topics of classical traditional control theory mainly oriented to the needs of automatic control of technical devices and technological proc- esses. Taking into account a variety of new applications, the book presents a compact and uniform description containing traditional analysis and op- timization problems for control systems as well as control problems with non-probabilistic models of uncertainty, problems of learning, intelligent, knowledge-based and operation systems – important for applications in the control of manufacturing processes, in the project management and in the control of computer systems.

Design for manufacturability and statistical design encompass a number of activities and areas of study spanning the integrated circuit design and manufacturing worlds. In the early days of the planar integrated circuit, it was typical for a handful of practitioners working on a particular design to have a fairly complete understanding of the manufacturing process, the resulting semiconductor active and passive devices, as well as the resulting circuit - often composed of as few as tens of devices. With the success of semiconductor scaling, predicted and - to a certain extent even driven - by Moore’s law, and the vastly increased complexity of modern nano-meter scale processes and the billion-device circuits they allow, there came a necessary separation between the various disciplines.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a big field, and this is a big book. We have tried to explore the full breadth of the field, which encompasses logic, probability, and continuous mathematics; perception, reasoning, learning, and action; and everything from microelectronic devices to robotic planetary explorers. The book is also big because we go into some depth. The subtitle of this book is “A Modern Approach.” The intended meaning of this rather empty phrase is that we have tried to synthesize what is now known into a common frame- work, rather than trying to explain each subfield of AI in its own historical context. We apologize to those whose subfields are, as a result, less recognizable.

This paper presents a new type of electromagnetic damper with rotating inertial mass that has been devel oped to control the vibrations of structures subjected to earthquakes. The electromagnetic inertial mass damper (EIMD) consists of a ball screw that converts axial oscillation of the rod end into rotational motion of the internal flflywheel and an electric generator that is turned by the rotation of the inner rod. The EIMD is able to generate a large inertial force created by the rotating flflywheel and a variable damping force devel oped by the electric generator. Device performance tests of reduced-scale and full-scale EIMDs were under taken to verify the basic characteristics of the damper and the validity of the derived theoretical formulae. Shaking table tests of a three-story structure with EIMDs and earthquake response analyses of a building with EIMDs were conducted to demonstrate the seismic response control performance of the EIMD. The EIMD is able to reduce story drifts as well as accelerations and surpasses conventional types of dampers in reducing acceleration responses.
