The first Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) networks were launched during 2002. By the end of 2005 there were 100 open WCDMA networks and a total of over 150 operators having frequency licenses for WCDMA operation. Currently, the WCDMA networks are deployedinUniversalMobileTelecommunicationsSystem(UMTS)bandaround2GHz in Europe and Asia including Japan and Korea. WCDMA in America is deployed in the existing 850 and 1900 spectrum allocations while the new 3G band at 1700/2100 is expected to be available in the near future. 3GPP has defined the WCDMA operation also for several additional bands, which are expected to be taken into use during the coming years.

We were on the lookout for ice. I was in a 32 foot sailing yacht with writer and explorer Tristan Gooley, undertaking a double-handed sail from Scotland through the Faroes up to 66 33 45.7 N and the midnight sun. Now sailing out of the Arctic Circle we were approaching Iceland from the north, heading for the Denmark Straits, where ice flowed south. The Admiralty Pilot warned of bergs but the ice charts we had sailed with were over a week old. We needed an update.

The genesis for this book was my involvement with the development of the SystemView (now SystemVue) simulation program at Elanix, Inc. Over several years of development, technical support, and seminars, several issues kept recur- ring. This book addresses two aspects of network operation quality; namely, resource management and fault management. Network operation quality is among the functions to be fulfilled in order to offer quality of service, QoS, to the end user. It is characterized by four parameters: – packet loss; – delay; – jitter, or the variation of delay over time; – availability. Resource management employs mechanisms that enable the first three parameters to be guaranteed or optimized. Fault management aims to ensure continuity of service.

Microwave radio network design is a subset of activities that constitute the overall transmission network design. Transmission networks are sometimes called transport networks, access networks, or connectivity networks. For many wireless carriers, microwave is becoming a popu- lar preference over wireline (leased lines) transport for many reasons, especially as microwave radio equipment costs decrease and installation becomes simpler. Low monthly operating costs can undercut those of typical single (and especially multiple) T1/E1 expenses, proving it to be more economical over the long term—usually two to four years. Network operators also like the fact that they can own and control microwave radio networks instead of relying on other service providers for network components.

The last decade proved to be hugely successful for the mobile communications industry, characterised by continued and rapid growth in demand, spurred on by new technological advances and innovative marketing techniques. Of course, when we refer to mobile commu- nications, we tend to implicitly refer to cellular systems, such as GSM. The plight of the mobile-satellite industry over the last decade, although eventful, has, at times, been more akin to an out of control roller coaster ride.
