SOMEnew telecommunication technologies were born out of the necessity for use of specific configurations of network elements and networks, as well as for a possibility of providing maximum characteristics of efficiency combined with high requirements to the stability of operation, the overcoming of different catastrophic situations and deadlockconditions,such as failuresand ”pending”of the networkandthe like. The thresholdbetweeninformationsystems andtelecommunicationsystems has become practically invisible. It resulted in such a new term as ”infocommunication”

SOME tine ago it become apparent the the first edition of this book was rapidly approaching its sell-by date,since many aspects needed revise.There were two obvious courses of action : to forget the whole thing and concentrate my energies on other pursuits such as golf or fishing, or to embark on a new edition.For several reasons Iwas persuaded that a new edition was a worthwhile endeavour;many people had made complimentary remakrs or written complinentary letters about the first edition and I understood that it had become a recommended text for several postgraduate coures.

In this book we focus on the basic signal processing that underlies current and future ultra wideband systems. By looking at signal processing in this way we hope this text will be useful even as UWB applications mature and change or regulations regarding ultra wideband systems are modified. The current UWB field is extremely dynamic, with new techniques and ideas being presented at every communications and signal-processing conference. The basic signal-processing techniques presented in this text though will not change for SOME time to come. Thus, we have taken a SOMEwhat theoretical approach, which we believe is longer lasting and more useful to the reader in the long term than an up-to-the-minute summary that is out of date as soon as it is published.

The continuing explosive growth in mobile communication is demanding more spectrally efficient radio access technologies than the prevalent second generation (2G) systems such as GSM to handle just the voice traffic. We are already witnessing high levels of mobile penetration exceeding 70% in SOME countries. It is anticipated that by 2010 more than half of all communications will be carried out by mobile cellular networks. On the other hand, the information revolution and changing life habits are bringing the requirement of commu- nicating on a multimedia level to the mobile environment. But the data handling capabilities and flexibility of the 2G cellular systems are limited.

The use of light to send messages is not new. Fires were used for signaling in biblical times, smoke signals have been used for thousands of years and flashing lights have been used to communicate between warships at sea since the days of Lord Nelson. The idea of using glass fibre to carry an optical communications signal originated with Alexander Graham Bell. However this idea had to wait SOME 80 years for better glasses and low-cost electronics for it to become useful in practical situations.

This chapter provides extensive coverage of existing mobile wireless technologies. Much of the emphasis is on the highly anticipated 3G cellular networks and widely deployed wireless local area networks (LANs), as the next-generation smart phones are likely to offer at least these two types of connectivity. Other wireless technologies that either have already been commercialized or are undergoing active research and standardization are introduced as well. Because standardization plays a crucial role in developing a new technology and a market, throughout the discussion standards organizations and industry forums or consortiums of SOME technologies are introduced. In addition, the last section of this chapter presents a list of standards in the wireless arena.

In 2001, Orange, a UK mobile network operator, announced the “Orange at Home” project, a smart house incorporating the latest technology wizardry built SOME 20 miles north of London. It was intended to be more than a mere showcase, with plans for real families to move in and live with the smart home. My then research establishment, the Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey, was commissioned to study how these families reacted to their new home, and to report lessons for the future development of smart homes and smart home technologies.

The first edition of the book was one of the elements of my habilitation (a quali- fication above a Ph.D., which is a necessary step for obtaining the title of a professor in Poland and other European countries), and as a result it was subse- quently very carefully reviewed by four reviewers. The habilitation was a success. Using the insightful comments from my reviewers, I have improved the current version and eliminated SOME typographic errors that were initially overlooked.
