This book is intended for RF planners, to serve as a practical tool in their daily work designing indoor radio distribution systems. Based on feedback from readers of the first edition it was clear to me that I needed to add more material and in depth description of the basics of indoor systems based on using repeaters; this has grown into a new Section 4.7. There was also a strong demand to add more detail and dedicate a full chapter to radio planning in tunnels, for both rail and road tunnels; and redundancy principles in the design focus for solving the challenge of handover zones. An entire Chapter 11 is now dedicated to tunnel radio planning.

With the rapid expansion of wireless consumer products, there has been a con- siderable increase in the need for radio-frequency (RF) planning, link plan- ning, and propagation modeling.A network designer with no RF background may find himself/herself designing a wireless network. A wide array of RF planning software packages can provide some support, but there is no substi- tute for a fundamental understanding of the propagation process and the lim- itations of the models employed. Blind use of computer-aided design (CAD) programs with no understanding of the physical fundamentals underlying the process can be a recipe for disaster. Having witnessed the results of this approach, I hope to spare others this frustration.

This book presents millimeter wave communication system design and analysis at the level to produce an understanding of the interaction between a wireless system and its front end so that the overall performance can be predicted. Gigabit wireless commu- nications require a considerable amount of bandwidth, which can be supported by millimeter waves. Millimeter wave technology has come of age, and at the time of writing the standards of IEEE 802.15.3c, WiGig, Wireless HD TM , and the European Computer Manufacturers Association have recently been finalized.

The last decade proved to be hugely successful for the mobile communications industry, characterised by continued and rapid growth in demand, spurred on by new technological advances and innovative marketing techniques. Of course, when we refer to mobile commu- nications, we tend to implicitly refer to cellular systems, such as GSM. The plight of the mobile-satellite industry over the last decade, although eventful, has, at times, been more akin to an out of control roller coaster ride.

Mobile wireless communications are in constant evolution due to the continu- ously increasing requirements and expectations of both users and operators. Mass multimedia* services have been for a long time expected to generate a large amount of data traffic in future wireless networks [1]. Mass multimedia services are, by definition, purposed for many people. In general, it can be distinguished between the distribution of any popular content over a wide area and the distribu- tion of location-dependent information in highly populated areas. Representative examples include the delivery of live video streaming content (like sports compe- titions, concerts, or news) and file download (multimedia clips, digital newspa- pers, or software updates).

An understanding of the policies, regulations, standards and techniques of radio spectrum management is useful to those who manage and administrate it, to operators, to equipment providers and to the users of wireless communication (i.e., all of us). For many years the author has been deeply involved in ruling the RF spectrum at the national, regional and global levels. The book is based on the professional experience of the author, his academic courses, presenta- tions and tutorials in five continents. The book reflects this legacy and will be of use to engineers, lawyers and economists, who serve the global industry of the wireless world; in it they may find solutions to the problems they frequently encounter.

Cognitive radios have become a vital solution that allows sharing of the scarce frequency spectrum available for wireless systems. It has been demonstrated that it can be used for future wireless systems as well as integrated into 4G/5G wireless systems. Although there is a great amount of literature in the design of cognitive radios from a system and networking point of view, there has been very limited available literature detailing the circuit implementation of such systems. Our textbook, Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit Design for Cognitive Radios, is the first book to fill a disconnect in the literature between Cognitive Radio systems and a detailed account of the circuit implementation and architectures required to implement such systems. In addition, this book describes several novel concepts that advance state-of-the-art cognitive radio systems.

Radio frequency spectrum is a scarce and critical natural resource that is utilized for many services including surveillance, navigation, communication, and broadcast- ing. Recent years have seen tremendous growth in the use of spectrum especially by commercial cellular operators. Ubiquitous use of smartphones and tablets is one of the reasons behind an all-time high utilization of spectrum. As a result, cellular operators are experiencing a shortage of radio spectrum to meet bandwidth demands of users. On the other hand, spectrum measurements have shown that much spectrum not held by cellular operators is underutilized even in dense urban areas. This has motivated shared access to spectrum by secondary systems with no or minimal impact on incumbent systems. Spectrum sharing is a promising approach to solve the problem of spectrum congestion as it allows cellular operators access to more spectrum in order to satisfy the ever-growing bandwidth demands of commercial users.

The continuing vitality of spread-spectrum communication systems and the devel- opment of new mathematical methods for their analysis provided the motivation to undertake this new edition of the book. This edition is intended to enable readers to understand the current state-of-the-art in this field. Almost twenty percent of the materialinthiseditionisnew, includingseveralnewsections, anewchapteronadap- tive arrays and filters, and a new chapter on code-division multiple-access networks. The remainder of the material has been thoroughly revised, and I have removed a considerable amount of material that has been superseded by more definitive results.
