Abstract: This document details the Lakewood (MAXREFDES7#) subsystem reference design, a 3.3V input, ±12V (±15V) output, isolated power supply. The Lakewood reference design includes a 3W primary-side transformer H-bridge driver for isolated supplies, and two wide input range and adjustable output low-dropout linear regulators (LDOs). Test results and hardware files are included.

Abstract: Some power architectures require the power supply sequencer (or system manager) to controldownstream power MOSFETs to allow power to flow into branch circuits. This application note explains howsystem power sequencing and level shifting can be accomplished using a low-voltage system manager

Abstract: This article explores criteria necessary for reliable communication between electric vehicles (EVs) and electric vehicleservice equipment (EVSE). Data will demonstrate that a G3-PLC system has already met the criteria established by the automotiveand utility industries. Multiple international tests prove that a G3-PLC implementation is the optimal low-frequency solution.

Abstract: Uses the MAX641 switching controller and an external discrete charge pump to step up the input voltage. This circuitcan service low loads and is efficient when the output is two, three, four times the input voltage. Adding the MAX627 MOSdriver can further increase the output current capability.

Abstract: It is critically important that lithium-ion battery stacks have a good battery-management system for monitoring many cellvoltages and cell temperatures. Without that monitoring, thermal runaway can lead to a battery explosion. This design idea presentsa low-power circuit that measures the temperature of up to 12 thermistors. It powers and configures the multiplexers, and also putsthe muxes into shutdown to save power when not measuring temperatures.

Linear Technology offers a variety of devices that simplifyconverting power from a USB cable, but the LTC®3455represents the highest level of functional integration yet. The LTC3455 seamlessly manages power flowbetween an AC adapter, USB cable and Li-ion battery, while complying with USB power standards, all from a4mm × 4mm QFN package. In addtion, two high efficiencysynchronous buck converters generate low voltage railswhich most USB-powered peripherals require. TheLTC3455 also provides power-on reset signals for themicroprocessor, a Hot SwapTM output for poweringmemory cards as well as an uncommitted gain blocksuitable for use as a low-battery comparator or an LDOcontroller. The PCB real estate required for the entire USBpower control circuit and two DC/DC converters is only225mm2.

The core voltages for FPGAs are moving lower as a resultof advances in the fabrication process. The newest FPGAfamily from Altera, the Stratix® II, now requires a corevoltage of 1.2V and the Stratix, Stratix GX, HardCopy®Stratix and CycloneTM families require a core voltage of1.5V. This article discusses how to power the core and I/Oof low voltage FPGAs using the latest step-down switchmode controllers from Linear Technology Corporation.
