A large group of fiber optic lasers are powered by DCcurrent. Laser drive is supplied by a current source withmodulation added further along the signal path. Thecurrent source, although conceptually simple, constitutesan extraordinarily tricky design problem. There are anumber of practical requirements for a fiber optic currentsource and failure to consider them can cause laser and/or optical component destruction.

As logic systems get larger and more complex, theirsupply current requirements continue to rise. Systemsrequiring 100A are fairly common. A high current powersupply to meet such requirements usually requires parallelingseveral power regulators to alleviate the thermalstress on the individual power components. A powersupply designer is left with the choice of how to drive theseparalleled regulators: brute-force single-phase or smartPolyPhaseTM.

Photomultipliers (PMT), avalanche photodiodes (APD),ultrasonic transducers, capacitance microphones, radiationdetectors and similar devices require high voltage, low current bias. Additionally, the high voltage must bepristinely free of noise; well under a millivolt is a commonrequirement with a few hundred microvolts sometimesnecessary. Normally, switching regulator confi gurationscannot achieve this performance level without employingspecial techniques. One aid to achieving low noise is thatload currents rarely exceed 5mA. This freedom permitsoutput fi ltering methods that are usually impractical

This collection of circuits was worked out between June1991 and July of 1994. Most were designed at customerrequest or are derivatives of such efforts. All representsubstantial effort and, as such, are disseminated here forwider study and (hopefully) use.1 The examples areroughly arranged in categories including power conversion, transducer signal conditioning, amplifiers and signalgenerators. As always, reader comment and questionsconcerning variants of the circuits shown may be addresseddirectly to the author.

This ink marks LTC’s eighth circuit collection publication.1We are continually surprised, to the point of near mystification, by these circuit amalgams seemingly limitlessappeal. Reader requests ascend rapidly upon publication, remaining high for years, even decades. All LTC circuitcollections, despite diverse content, share this popularity, although just why remains an open question. Why isit? Perhaps the form; compact, complete, succinct andinsular. Perhaps the freedom of selection without commitment, akin to window shopping.

Notebook and palmtop systems need a multiplicity ofregulated voltages developed from a single battery. Smallsize, light weight, and high efficiency are mandatory forcompetitive solutions in this area. Small increases inefficiency extend battery life, making the final productmuch more usable with no increase in weight. Additionally, high efficiency minimizes the heat sinks needed onthe power regulating components, further reducing systemweight and size.

The above title is not happenstance and was arrived at afterconsiderable deliberation. As a linear IC manufacturer, it isour goal to encourage users to design and build switchingregulators. A problem is that while everyone agrees thatworking switching regulators are a good thing, everyonealso agrees that they are difficult to get working. Switchingregulators, with their high efficiency and small size, areincreasingly desirable as overall package sizes shrink.Unfortunately, switching regulators are also one of themost difficult linear circuits to design. Mysterious modes, sudden, seemingly inexplicable failures, peculiar regulationcharacteristics and just plain explosions are commonoccurrences. Diodes conduct the wrong way. Things gethot that shouldn’t. Capacitors act like resistors, fusesdon’t blow and transistors do. The output is at ground, andthe ground terminal shows volts of noise.

The LTM4601 DC/DC μModule regulator is a completehigh power density stepdown regulator for up to 12Acontinuous (14A peak) loads. The device is housed ina small 15mm ¥ 15mm ¥ 2.8mm LGA surface mountpackage, thus the large power dissipation is a challengein some applications. This thermal application note willprovide guidelines for using the μModule regulator inambient environments with or without air fl ow. Loadcurrent derating curves are provided for several inputvoltages and output voltages versus ambient temperatureand air fl ow.

Switching regulators are of universal interest. LinearTechnology has made a major effort to address this topic.A catalog of circuits has been compiled so that a designengineer can swiftly determine which converter type isbest. This catalog serves as a visual index to be browsedthrough for a specific or general interest.

The LTM8020, LTM8021, LTM8022 and LTM8023 μModule®regulators are complete easy-to-use encapsulated stepdownDC/DC regulators intended to take the pain and aggravationout of implementing a switching power supplyonto a system board. With a μModule regulator, you onlyneed an input cap, output cap and one or two resistorsto complete the design. As one might imagine, this highlevel of integration greatly simplifi es the task of printedcircuit board design, reducing the effort to four categories:component footprint generation, component placement, routing the nets, and thermal vias.
