  • UMTS+Performance+Measurement+A+Practical+Guide

Having dealt with in-depth analysis of SS#7, GSM and GPRS NetWorks I started to monitor UTRAN interfaces approximately four years ago. Monitoring interfaces means decoding the data captured on the links and analysing how the different data segments and messages are related to each other. In general I wanted to trace all messages belonging to a single call to prove if the NetWork elements and protocol entities involved worked fine or if there had been failures or if any kind of suspicious events had influenced the normal call proceeding or the call’s quality of service. Cases showing normal NetWork behaviour have been documented in Kreher and Ruedebusch (UMTS Signaling. John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, 2005), which provides examples for technical experts investigating call flows and NetWork procedures.

  • Utility Maximization in Nonconvex Wireless Systems

Once upon a time, cellular wireless NetWorks provided two basic services: voice telephony and low-rate text messaging. Users in the NetWork were separated by orthogonal multiple access schemes, and cells by generous frequency reuse patterns [1]. Since then, the proliferation of wireless services, fierce competition, andthe emergenceof new service classes such as wireless data and multimediahave resulted in an ever increasing pressure on NetWork operators to use resources in a moreefficient manner. In the contextof wireless NetWorks, two of the most common resources are power and spectrum—and, due to regulations, these resources are typically scarce. Hence, in contrast to wired NetWorks, overprovisioning is not feasible in wireless NetWorks.

  • Voice+Over+WLANS

Two of the major developments reshaping the telecommunications landscape are mobile wireless connectivity and the migration of voice telephone services to IP technology. Those two ideas come together in NetWorks that carry voice services over a wireless LAN (VoWLAN). The purpose of this text is to provide NetWork professionals with the technical background and practical guidance needed to deploy these NetWorks successfully.

  • WIRELESS+AD-HOC+NetWorkS

A wireless ad-hoc NetWork is a wireless NetWork deployed without any infrastructure. In such a NetWork, there is no access point or wireless router to forward messages among the computing devices. Instead, these devices depend on the ad-hoc mode of their wireless net‐ work interface cards to communicate with each other. If the nodes are within the transmis‐ sion range of the wireless signal, they can send messages to each other directly. Otherwise, the nodes in between will forward the messages for them. Thus, each node is both an end system and a router simultaneously.

  • Wireless+Mesh+NetWorking

Wireless Mesh NetWorks (WMN) are believed to be a highly promising technology and will play an increasingly important role in future generation wireless mobile NetWorks. WMN is characterized by dynamic self-organization, self-configuration and self-healing to enable quick deployment, easy maintenance, low cost, high scalability and reliable services, as well as enhancing NetWork capacity, connect- ivity and resilience.

  • Inside+the+Smart+Home

In 2001, Orange, a UK mobile NetWork operator, announced the “Orange at Home” project, a smart house incorporating the latest technology wizardry built some 20 miles north of London. It was intended to be more than a mere showcase, with plans for real families to move in and live with the smart home. My then research establishment, the Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey, was commissioned to study how these families reacted to their new home, and to report lessons for the future development of smart homes and smart home technologies.

  • Cognitive+Radio+NetWorks

Resource allocation is an important issue in wireless communication NetWorks. In recent decades, cognitive radio technology and cognitive radio-based NetWorks have obtained more and more attention and have been well studied to improve spectrum utilization and to overcomethe problem of spectrum scarcity in future wireless com- munication systems. Many new challenges on resource allocation appear in cogni- tive radio-based NetWorks. In this book, we focus on effective solutions to resource allocation in several important cognitive radio-based NetWorks, including a cogni- tive radio-basedopportunisticspectrum access NetWork, a cognitiveradio-basedcen- tralized NetWork, a cognitive radio-based cellular NetWork, a cognitive radio-based high-speed vehicle NetWork, and a cognitive radio-based smart grid.

  • Computational+Intelligence

The large-scale deployment of the smart grid (SG) paradigm could play a strategic role in supporting the evolution of conventional electrical grids toward active, flexible and self- healing web energy NetWorks composed of distributed and cooperative energy resources. From a conceptual point of view, the SG is the convergence of information and operational technologies applied to the electric grid, providing sustainable options to customers and improved security. Advances in research on SGs could increase the efficiency of modern electrical power systems by: (i) supporting the massive penetration of small-scale distributed and dispersed generators; (ii) facilitating the integration of pervasive synchronized metering systems; (iii) improving the interaction and cooperation between the NetWork components; and (iv) allowing the wider deployment of self-healing and proactive control/protection paradigms.

  • Electric+Distribution+NetWork+Planning

Electric distribution NetWorks are critical parts of power delivery systems. In recent years, many new technologies and distributed energy resources have been inte- grated into these NetWorks. To provide electricity at the possible lowest cost and at required quality, long-term planning is essential for these NetWorks. In distribution planning, optimal location and size of necessary upgrades are determined to satisfy the demand and the technical requirements of the loads and to tackle uncertainties associated with load and distributed energy resources.

  • Smart+Grid

The term “ smart grid ” defi nes a self - healing NetWork equipped with dynamic optimiza- tion techniques that use real - time measurements to minimize NetWork losses, maintain voltage levels, increase reliability, and improve asset management. The operational data collected by the smart grid and its sub - systems will allow system operators to rapidly identify the best strategy to secure against attacks, vulnerability, and so on, caused by various contingencies. However, the smart grid fi rst depends upon identifying and researching key performance measures, designing and testing appropriate tools, and developing the proper education curriculum to equip current and future personnel with the knowledge and skills for deployment of this highly advanced system.
