The main features of the considered identification problem are that there is no an a priori separation of the variables into inputs and outputs and the approximation criterion, called misfit, does not depend on the model representation. The misfit is defined as the minimum of the l2-norm between the given time series and a time series that is consistent with the approximate model. The misfit is equal to zero if and only if the model is exact and the smaller the misfit is (by definition) the more accurate the model is. The considered model class consists of all linear time-invariant systems of bounded complexity and the complexity is specified by the number of inputs and the smallest number of lags in a difference equation representation. We present a Matlab function for approximate identification based on misfit minimization. The files in this directory comprise ANSI-C language reference implementations of the CCITT (International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee) G.711, G.721 and G.723 voice compressions. They have been tested on Sun SPARCstations and passed 82 out of 84 test vectors published by CCITT (Dec. 20, 1988) for G.721 and G.723. [The two remaining test vectors, which the G.721 decoder implementation for u-law samples did not pass, may be in error because they are identical to two other vectors for G.723_40.]

This approach addresses two difficulties simultaneously: 1) the range limitation of mobile robot sensors and 2) the difficulty of detecting buildings in monocular aerial images. With the suggested method building outlines can be detected faster than the mobile robot can explore the area by itself, giving the robot an ability to “see” around corners. At the same time, the approach can compensate for the absence of elevation data in segmentation of aerial images. Our experiments demonstrate that ground-level semantic information (wall estimates) allows to focus the segmentation of the aerial image to find buildings and produce a ground-level semantic map that covers a larger area than can be built using the onboard sensors.

Semantic analysis of multimedia content is an on going research area that has gained a lot of attention over the last few years. Additionally, machine learning techniques are widely used for multimedia analysis with great success. This work presents a combined approach to semantic adaptation of neural network classifiers in multimedia framework. It is based on a fuzzy reasoning engine which is able to evaluate the outputs and the confidence levels of the neural network classifier, using a knowledge base. Improved image segmentation results are obtained, which are used for adaptation of the network classifier, further increasing its ability to provide accurate classification of the specific content.

We address the problem of predicting a word from previous words in a sample of text. In particular, we discuss n-gram models based on classes of words. We also discuss several statistical algorithms for assigning words to classes based on the frequency of their co-occurrence with other words. We find that we are able to extract classes that have the flavor of either syntactically based groupings or semantically based groupings, depending on the nature of the underlying statistics.
