RFID networks are currently recognized as one a research area of priority. Research activities related to RFID technology have been booming recently. A number of ongoing projects are being funded in Europe, Asia, and North America. According to leading market analysts, the development of the RFID market is projected to increase from approximately $3 billion in 2005 to $25 billion in 2015. Several countries have dedicated innovation programs to support and develop RFID systems and related technologies: the RFID initiative in Taiwan, Ubiquitous Japan and the NSF SBIR program in the USA. The EU has recently advertised its Strategic Research Roadmap concerning the Internet of Things, which first of all refers to the RFID technology before being extended to commu- nicating devices as in M2M (Machine to Machine). I can remember buying my first electronic calculator. I was teaching a graduate level statistics course and I had to have a calculator with a square root function. Back in the late 1960s, that was a pretty high-end requirement for a calculator. I managed to purchase one at the “educational discount price” of $149.95! Now, I look down at my desk at an ATmega2560 that is half the size for less than a quarter of the cost and think of all the possibilities built into that piece of hardware. I am amazed by what has happened to everything from toasters to car engines. Who-da-thunk-it 40 years ago?

In this presentation, we will look at what the Serial Peripheral Interface, otherwise known as the SPI, is. and how it is used to communicate data to and from the PICmicro microcontroller.SPl is frequently used when few 1/O lines are available, but communication between two or more devices must be fast and easy to implement.In this presentation, we will discuss the following topics: We will first cover an Overview of SPI This section of the tutorial will introduce you to SPI and its concepts.Next, we will examine the use of SPI on the PICmicro MCU.The details of how SPI is implemented on a PICmicro device will be examined.Then, a Code Walkthrough will be given.The walkthough will explore code for both an SPI Master and SPI Slave. The example will have the Master generate data for sending to the slave.Finally, there will be a few resources given at the end of the presentation.
