  • Channel+Coding+in+Communication+Networks

The very title of this book is borrowed from the information theory vocabulary, and, quite naturally, it is an outline of this theory that will serve as an introduction. The subject of information theory is the scientific study of communications. To this end it defines a quantitative measurement of the communicated content, i.e. informa- tion, and deals with two operations essential for communication techniques: source coding and channel encoding.

  • Mobile Broadband Multimedia Networks Techniques

This books presents the research work of COST 273 Towards Mobile Broadband Multimedia Networks, hence, it reports on the work performed and on the results achieved within the project by its participants. The material presented here corresponds to the results obtained in four years of collaborative work by more than 350 researchers from 137 institutions (universities, operators, manufacturers, regulators, independent laboratories and others – a full list is provided in Appendix B) belonging to 29 countries (mainly European, but also from Asia and North America) in the area of mobileradio. Theobjectiveofpublishingtheseresultsasabookisessentiallytomakethemavailable to an audience wider than the project. In fact, it just follows a ‘tradition’ of previous COST Actions in this area of telecommunications, i.e. COST 207, 231 and 259.

  • Radio+Spectrum+Management

An understanding of the policies, regulations, standards and techniques of radio spectrum management is useful to those who manage and administrate it, to operators, to equipment providers and to the users of wireless communication (i.e., all of us). For many years the author has been deeply involved in ruling the RF spectrum at the national, regional and global levels. The book is based on the professional experience of the author, his academic courses, presenta- tions and tutorials in five continents. The book reflects this legacy and will be of use to engineers, lawyers and economists, who serve the global industry of the wireless world; in it they may find solutions to the problems they frequently encounter.

  • RF Imperfections

The unguided transmission of information using electromagnetic waves at radio frequency (RF) is often referred to as wireless communications, the first demonstration of which took place at the end of the 19th cen- tury and is attributed to Hertz. The technology was, shortly thereafter, commercialised by, amongst others, Marconi in one of the first wire- less communication systems, i.e., wireless telegraphy. In the first half of the 20th century the technology was developed further to enable more than the mere transmission of Morse code. This first resulted in uni- directional radio broadcasting and several years later also in television broadcasting.

  • Wavelength Division Multiplexing

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) refers to a multiplexing and transmission scheme in optical telecommunications fibers where different wavelengths, typically emitted by several lasers, are modulated independently (i.e., they carry independent information from the transmitters to the receivers). These wavelengths are then multiplexed in the transmitter by means of passive WDM filters, and likewise they are separated or demultiplexed in the receiver by means of the same filters or coherent detection that usually involves a tunable local oscillator (laser).

  • Electrostatic Discharge Protection

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is one of the most prevalent threats to the reliability of electronic components. It is an event in which a finite amount of charge is trans- ferred from one object (i.e., human body) to another (i.e., microchip). This process can result in a very high current passing through the microchip within a very short period of time, and, hence, more than 35% of chip damages can be attributed to an ESD-related event. As such, designing on-chip ESD structures to protect integrated circuits against the ESD stresses is a high priority in the semiconductor industry.

  • Cogeneration+and+District+Energy+Systems

District energy (DE) systems use central heating and/or cooling facilities to provide heating and/or cooling services for communities. The advantages of district energy over conventional heating and cooling include improved efficiency, reliability and safety, reduced environmental impact, and for many situations better economics. DE systems can be particularly beneficial when integrated with cogeneration plants for electricity and heat, i.e., with combined heat and power (CHP) plants. One of the main impediments to increased use of cogeneration-based district energy is a lack of understanding of the behavior of integrated forms of such systems. This book is aimed at providing information on district energy and cogeneration tech- nologies, as well as systems that combine them.

  • Internet+Data+Centers

With the proliferation of cloud computing and Internet online services, more and more data and computation are migrated to geographical distributed Internet data centers (IDCs), which can provide reliability, management, and cost benefits. However, IDC operators encounter several major problems in IDC operations, such as huge energy consumption and energy cost, and high carbon emission. To deal with the above problems, IDC operators have to efficiently manage the way of energy consumption and energy supply. Considering the potential of smart grid, we focus on the energy management of IDCs in smart grid from several perspectives, i.e., power outage, carbon emission, heterogeneous service delay guarantees, and operation risk.

  • Wireless Identification

We are in the era of ubiquitous computing in which the use and development of Radio Frequency Iden- tification (RFID) is becoming more widespread. RFID systems have three main components: readers, tags, and database. An RFID tag is composed of a small microchip, limited logical functionality, and an antenna. Most common tags are passive and harvest energy from a nearby RFID reader. This energy is used both to energize the chip and send the answer back to the reader request. The tag provides a unique identifier (or an anonymized version of that), which allows the unequivocal identification of the tag holder (i.e. person, animal, or items).

  • Machine learning

Machine learning is about designing algorithms that automatically extract valuable information from data. The emphasis here is on “automatic”, i.e., machine learning is concerned about general-purpose methodologies that can be applied to many datasets, while producing something that is mean- ingful. There are three concepts that are at the core of machine learning: data, a model, and learning.
