The wireless market has experienced a phenomenal growth since the first second- generation (2G) digital cellular networks, based on global system for mobile communications (GSM) technology, were introduced in the early 1990s. Since then, GSM has become the dominant global 2G radio access StANDard. Almost 80% of today’s new subscriptions take place in one of the more than 460 cellular networks that use GSM technology. This growth has taken place simultaneously with the large experienced expansion of access to the Internet and its related multimedia services.

LTE-Advanced becomes a truly global StANDard for 4G cellular communications. Relay, as one of the key technologies of LTE-Advanced, can significantly extend the coverage, and improve the system throughput. LTE-A StANDards and tech- nologies were described in several recent books where the limited pages for relay feature prevent the detailed explanations of the technology. In this book, we tried to provide an in-depth description of LTE-A relay development. More specifically, significant portions are spent on relay channel modeling and potential technologies during the study item phase of the development, although some of those tech- nologies, such as Type 2 cooperative relay, multi-hop relay, relay with backhaul of carrier aggregation, were not StANDardized in Release 10 LTE.

Multi-carrier modulation‚ Orthogonal Frequency Division Multi- plexing (OFDM) particularly‚ has been successfully applied to a wide variety of digital communications applications over the past several years. Software Radio (SR) is one of the most important emerging technologies for the future of wireless communication services. By moving radio functionality into software, it promises to give flexible radio systems that are multi-service, multi- StANDard, multi-band, reconfigurable and reprogrammable by software. Today’s radios are matched to a particular class of signals that are well defined bytheircarrierfrequencies,modulationformatsandbandwidths.Aradiotransmitter today can only up convert signals with well-defined bandwidths over defined center frequencies, while, on the other side of the communication chain, a radio receiver can only down convert well-defined signal bandwidths, transmitted over specified carrier frequencies.

The basic topic of this book is solving problems from system and control theory using convex optimization. We show that a wide variety of problems arising in system and control theory can be reduced to a handful of StANDard convex and quasiconvex optimization problems that involve matrix inequalities. For a few special cases there are “analytic solutions” to these problems, but our main point is that they can be solved numerically in all cases. These StANDard problems can be solved in polynomial- time (by, e.g., the ellipsoid algorithm of Shor, Nemirovskii, and Yudin), and so are tractable, at least in a theoretical sense. Recently developed interior-point methods for these StANDard problems have been found to be extremely efficient in practice. Therefore, we consider the original problems from system and control theory as solved.
