This tutorial presents an introduction to Altera’s Nios R II processor, which is a soft processor that can be in- stantiated on an Altera FPGA device. It describes the basic architecture of Nios II and its instruction set. The NiosII processor and its associated memory and peripheral components are easily instantiated by using Altera’s SOPCBuilder in conjuction with the Quartus R II software.

QuickSteps books are recipe books for computer users. They answer the question 揌ow do I...??by providing a quick set of steps to accomplish the most common tasks with a particular program. The sets of steps are the central focus of the book. Sidebar QuickSteps provide information on how to do quickly many small functions or tasks that are in support of the primary functions. Sidebar QuickFacts supply information that you need to know about a subject. Notes, Tips, and Cautions augment the steps, but they are presented in a separate column to not interrupt the fl ow. Brief introductions are present, but there is minimal narrative otherwise. Many illustrations and fi gures, a number with callouts, are also included where they support the steps.

As I write this foreword, I am collaborating with four leading user interface (UI) component vendors on a presentation for the 2004 JavaOneSM conference. In our presentation, the vendors will show how they leverage JavaServerTM Faces technology in their products. While developing the presentation, I am learning some things about the work we’ve been doing on JavaServer Faces for the past three years. The vendors have their own set of concerns unique to adapting their product for JavaServer Faces, but they all voice one opinion loud and clear: they are very relieved to finally have a standard for web-based user interfaces.

This code outputs various NMEA strings to a com port. The code was originally used to test naviation programmes. First select the required com port and the required NMEA message string. There is a default starting position but this can be changed to suit just by typing in a new position. Click on the Start button the current position displayed will change according to the speed and heading selected and the selected NMEA string will be output to the com port and will reflect the current position as displayed. There is a text box which is normally not visible. If you change this to visible the relevant NMEA string can be displayed.

This control is another extension to the now standard and widely used ListView control. I have included some of the more common features: shaded columns, column sorting (with data type), but the real addition is the FILTERBAR features of the header. This implementation eliminates all of the work of dealing with the filter messages and item filtering by incorporating it into the control. This could have been implemented as delegates, but we create controls to do the work for us, don t we? I would like to thank Carlos H. Perez since a lot of the implementation came from examples he set with his ListViewEx control.
