This document provides guidelines for integrating a discrete high speed USB host controller onto a fourlayer desktop motherboard. The material covered can be broken into three main categories: Board design guidelines, EMI/ESD guidelines and front panel USB guidelines. Section 1.1 Background provides an explanation of the routing exPERiments and testing PERformed to validate the feasibility of 480 Megabits PER second on an actual motherboard. Section 7 contains a design checklist that lists each design recommendation described in this document. High speed USB oPERation is described in the USB 2.0 Specification (http://www.usb.org/develoPERs/docs.html).

Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a communications architecture that gives a PERsonal computer (PC) the ability to interconnect a variety of devices using a simple four- wire cable. The USB is actually a two-wire serial communication link that runs at either 1.5 or 12 megabits PER second (mbs). USB protocols can configure devices at startup or when they are plugged in at run time. These devices are broken into various device classes. Rao-Blackwellised Particle Filters (RBPFs) are a class of Particle Filters (PFs) that exploit conditional dependencies between parts of the state to estimate. By doing so, RBPFs can improve the estimation quality while also reducing the overall computational load in comparison to original PFs. However, the computational complexity is still too high for many real-time applications. In this paPER, we propose a modified RBPF that requires a single Kalman Filter (KF) iteration PER input sample. Comparative exPERiments show that while good convergence can still be obtained, computational efficiency is always drastically increased, making this algorithm an option to consider for real-time implementations.

The Radio Interface Layer is the name for an interface that was developed especially for the Pocket PC Phone Edition. It is meant to abstract the interface with a phone/modem device. To achieve this it is closely modelled after the GSM AT command interface. Unfortunately the API was not published officially by Microsoft. Instead more high level API s were published that should be sufficient for develoPERs. Again, unfortunately they are not sufficient. For example the API for receiving notification of incoming SMS messages is arranged for exclusively for one application PER type of SMS. Apparently this will be improved upon in Pocket PC 2003. Another area is the availablity of a true AT command modem interface to interact with the GSM modem directly, which is also absent.

The DHRY program PERforms the dhrystone benchmarks on the 8051. Dhrystone is a general-PERformance benchmark test originally developed by Reinhold Weicker in 1984. This benchmark is used to measure and compare the PERformance of different computers or, in this case, the efficiency of the code generated for the same computer by different compilers. The test reports general PERformance in dhrystones PER second. Like most benchmark programs, dhrystone consists of standard code and concentrates on string handling. It uses no floating-point oPERations. It is heavily influenced by hardware and software design, compiler and linker options, code optimizing, cache memory, wait states, and integer data types.
