With this book at your fingertips, you, the reader, and I have something in common. We share the same interest in mobile radio channels. This area attracted my interest first in autumn 1992 whenImovedfromindustrytoacademiatofindachallengeinmylifeandtopursueascientific career. Since then, I consider myself as a student of the mobile radio channel who lives for modelling, analyzing, and simulating them. While the first edition of this book resulted from my teaching and research activities at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH), Germany, the present second edition is entirely an outcome of my work at the University of Agder, Norway.

One of the very first books published on the social impact of the mobile phone was Timo Kopomaa’s The City in Your Pocket: Birth of the Mobile Information Society. The book, published in 2000, was based on research that Kopomaa had under- taken for Nokia and Sonera as part of his doctoral studies in the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies at the Helsinki University of Technology. The first line he writes in the book is peculiar: ‘Mobile communication is not a serious matter’. By this, we assume he is referring to a view of the world that would regard the mobile phone as little more than an unremarkable fact of everyday life – a simple play- thing for the young, or a productivity tool for the business executive and busy parent.

With the rapid growth of the wireless mobile applications, wireless voice has begun to challenge wireline voice, whereas the desire to access e-mail, surf the Web or download music (e.g., MP3) wirelessly is increasing for wireless data. While second generation (2G) cellular wireless systems, such as cdmaOne1, GSM2 and TDMA3, introduced digital technology to wireless cellular systems to deal with the increasing demand for wireless applications, there is still the need for more spectrally efficient technologies for two reasons. First, wireless voice capacity is expected to continue to grow. Second, the introduction of high-speed wireless data will require more bandwidth.

The last decade proved to be hugely successful for the mobile communications industry, characterised by continued and rapid growth in demand, spurred on by new technological advances and innovative marketing techniques. Of course, when we refer to mobile commu- nications, we tend to implicitly refer to cellular systems, such as GSM. The plight of the mobile-satellite industry over the last decade, although eventful, has, at times, been more akin to an out of control roller coaster ride.

There have been many advances in communication circuits since the publication of the first edition of this book.Yet most of communication circuit fundamentals remain intact.Amplifier, oscillator , tuned circuits, transformers, mixers and power amplifiers still among fundamental building blocks of communication circuits.

This is believed to be the first book that takes a view of nanotechnology from a telecommunications and networking perspective. Nanotechnology refers to the manip- ulation of materials at the atomic or molecular level. Nanotechnology is getting a lot of attention of late not only in academic settings and in laboratories around the world, but also in government and venture capitalists’ initiatives. There now is a major drive to commercialize the technology by all sorts of firms, ranging from start- ups to Fortune 100 companies.

Never have telecommunications operations and network management been so important. Never has it been more important to move away from practices that date back to the very beginning of the telecommunications industry. Building and con- necting systems internally at low cost, on an as - needed basis, and adding software for supporting new networks and services without an overall architectural design will not be cost effective for the future. Defi ning operations and network manage- ment requirements at the 11th hour for new technologies, networks, and services deployments must also change.

The telecommunications industry has seen a rapid boost within the last decade. New realities and visions of functionalities in various telecommunications networks have brought forward the concept of next-generation networks (NGNs). The competitions among operators for support- ing various services, lowering of the cost of having mobile and cellular phones and smartphones, increasing demand for general mobility, explosion of digital traffic, and advent of convergence network technologies added more dynamism in the idea of NGNs. In fact, facilitating con- vergence of networks and convergence of various types of services is a significant objective of NGNs.

his research aims at creating broadband tunable, fully integrated filters for the application of cognitive radio and signal classification receivers. The approach under study is the N-path filter technique which is capable of translating a baseband impedance to a reference frequency creating a tunable filter. The traditional N-path filter suffers from fundamental architectural limitations, namely : a trade-off between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection, reference clock feed- through, and jammer power handling limitations. In the first approach, the fundamental trade- off of the traditional N-path filter between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection is improved by a transmission line (T-line) N-path filter technique.
