  • Standardization+in+Smart+Grids

One of the predominant topics in the domain of the emerging Smart Grid can be seen in standardization. With the combination of existing protection and automa- tion technology with upcoming ICT-based solutions, different interoperability is- sues arise when technologies have to be combined in the infrastructure. Standards have proven to be one of the most striking solutions to actually cope with this topic. Since 2008, this topic has gained much attention in various political and technical agendas.

  • Radio Frequency Identification and Sensors

There is an unprecedented enthusiasm for radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies today. RFID is based on the exchange of information carried by electromagnetic waves between a label, or tag, and a reader. This technology is currently in full economic expansion, which has manifested itself in widely backed research activities, some of which will be examined in this book.

RFID (radio-frequency identification) is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequencyelectromagnetic fields to transfer datafrom a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking [38]. The basic technologies for RFID have been around for a long time. Its root can be traced back to an espionage device designed in 1945 by Leon Theremin of the Soviet Union, whichretransmittedincidentradiowaves modulatedwith audioinformation. After decades of development, RFID systems have gain more and more attention from both the research community and the industry.

  • RFID+Security

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a type of automatic identification systems which has gained popularity in recent years for being fast and reliable in keeping track of the individual objects. In RFID systems, contactless object identification is achieved using radio signals without the need for physical contact as the case with other existing identification technologies such as barcodes. Therefore, a huge number of items can be identified in a short amount of time with high reliability and low cost which makes the RFID technology very attractive for a wide range of applications such as supply chain management, e-health, monitoring humans, pets, animals, and many other objects, toll control, and electrical tagging. Furthermore, RFID technology eliminates the human error and reduces the total cost of the products.

  • RFID+Systems

RFID networks are currently recognized as one a research area of priority. Research activities related to RFID technology have been booming recently. A number of ongoing projects are being funded in Europe, Asia, and North America. According to leading market analysts, the development of the RFID market is projected to increase from approximately $3 billion in 2005 to $25 billion in 2015. Several countries have dedicated innovation programs to support and develop RFID systems and related technologies: the RFID initiative in Taiwan, Ubiquitous Japan and the NSF SBIR program in the USA. The EU has recently advertised its Strategic Research Roadmap concerning the Internet of Things, which first of all refers to the RFID technology before being extended to commu- nicating devices as in M2M (Machine to Machine). In this roadmap, several application domains have been identified:

  • RFID+Technologies+for+Internet+of+Things

Internet of Things (IoT) [26] is a new networking paradigm for cyber-physical systems that allow physical objects to collect and exchange data. In the IoT, physical objects and cyber-agents can be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, which enables the integration between the physical world and computer-based systems and therefore extends the Internet into the real world. IoT can find numerous applications in smart housing, environmental monitoring, medical and health care systems, agriculture, transportation, etc. Because of its significant application potential, IoT has attracted a lot of attention from both academic research and industrial development.

  • RFID-WSN+Integrated+Architecture

Radio frequency identification (RFID) and Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are the two key wireless technologies that have diversified applications in the present and the upcoming systems in this area. RFID is a wireless automated recognition technology which is primarily used to recognize objects or to follow their posi- tion without providing any sign about the physical form of the substance. On the other hand, WSN not only offers information about the state of the substance and environment but also enables multi-hop wireless communications.

  • The Internet of Things From RFI

With more than two billion terminals in commercial operation world-wide, wire- less and mobile technologies have enabled a first wave of pervasive communication systems and applications. Still, this is only the beginning as wireless technologies such as RFID are currently contemplated with a deployment potential of tens of billions of tags and a virtually unlimited application potential. A recent ITU report depicts a scenario of “Internet of things” — a world in which billions of objects will report their location, identity, and history over wireless connections.

Modern information technologies and the advent of machines powered by artificial intelligence (AI) have already strongly influenced the world of work in the 21st century. Computers, algorithms and software simplify everyday tasks, and it is impossible to imagine how most of our life could be managed without them. However, is it also impossible to imagine how most process steps could be managed without human force? The information economy characterised by exponential growth replaces the mass production industry based on economy of scales
