Occasionally, we are tasked with designing circuitry for aspecific purpose. The request may have customer originsor it may be an in-house requirement. AlternATely, a circuitmay be developed because its possibility is simply tooATtractive to ignore1. Over time, these circuits accumulATe,encompassing a wide and useful body of proven capabilities.They also represent substantial effort. These considerATionsmake publicATion an almost obligATory propositionand, as such, a group of circuits is presented here. This isnot the first time we have displayed such wares and, giventhe encouraging reader response, it will not be the last2.Eighteen circuits are included in this lATest effort, roughlyarranged in the cATegories given in this publicATion’s title.They appear AT the next paragraph.

TelecommunicATion, sATellite links and set-top boxes allrequire tuning a high frequency oscillATor. The actualtuning element is a varactor diode, a 2-terminal device thATchanges capacitance as a function of reverse bias voltage.1 The oscillATor is part of a frequency synthesizingloop, as detailed in Figure 1. A phase locked loop (PLL)compares a divided down representATion of the oscillATorwith a frequency reference. The PLL’s output is levelshifted to provide the high voltage necessary to bias thevaractor, which closes a feedback loop by voltage tuningthe oscillATor. This loop forces the voltage controlledoscillATor (VCO) to operATe AT a frequency determined bythe frequency reference and the divider’s division rATio.

The above title is not happenstance and was arrived AT afterconsiderable deliberATion. As a linear IC manufacturer, it isour goal to encourage users to design and build switchingregulATors. A problem is thAT while everyone agrees thATworking switching regulATors are a good thing, everyonealso agrees thAT they are difficult to get working. SwitchingregulATors, with their high efficiency and small size, areincreasingly desirable as overall package sizes shrink.UnfortunATely, switching regulATors are also one of themost difficult linear circuits to design. Mysterious modes,sudden, seemingly inexplicable failures, peculiar regulATioncharacteristics and just plain explosions are commonoccurrences. Diodes conduct the wrong way. Things gethot thAT shouldn’t. Capacitors act like resistors, fusesdon’t blow and transistors do. The output is AT ground, andthe ground terminal shows volts of noise.

For a variety of reasons, it is desirable to charge bATteriesas rapidly as possible. AT the same time, overchargingmust be limited to prolong bATtery life. Such limitATion ofovercharging depends on factors such as the choice ofcharge terminATion technique and the use of multi-rATe/multi-stage charging schemes. The majority of bATterycharger ICs available today lock the user into one fixedcharging regimen, with AT best a limited number ofcustomizATion options to suit a variety of applicATion needsor bATtery types. The LTC®1325 addresses these shortcomingsby providing the user with all the functionalblocks needed to implement a simple but highly flexiblebATtery charger (see Figure 1) which not only addressesthe issue of charging bATteries but also those of bATteryconditioning and capacity monitoring.

Portable, bATtery-powered operATion of electronic apparATushas become increasingly desirable. Medical, remotedATa acquisition, power monitoring and other applicATionsare good candidATes for bATteryoperATion. In some circumstances,due to space, power or reliability considerATions,it is preferable to operATe the circuitry from a single 1.5Vcell. UnfortunATely, a 1.5V supply eliminATes almost alllinear ICs as design candidATes. In fact, the LM10 opamp-reference and the LT®1017/LT1018 comparATors arethe only IC gain blocks fully specifi ed for 1.5V operATion.Further complicATions are presented by the 600mV dropof silicon transistors and diodes. This limitATion consumesa substantial portion of available supply range, makingcircuit design diffi cult. Additionally, any circuit designedfor 1.5V operATion mustfunction AT end-of-life bATteryvoltage, typically 1.3V. (See Box Section, “Componentsfor 1.5V OperATion.”)

This paper deals with a study on photovoltaic inverter based on the concept of microgrid. This paper describes a system whose core component is the photovoltaic inverter,can work on grid-connected mode or run independently according to the external situATion. The paper simply describes the main components of the system. AT last,the prototype was produced and tested. When a system designer specifies a nonisolATed dc/dc powermodule, considering the needed input voltage range isequally as important as considering the required performanceATtributes and feATures. Generally, nonisolATed moduleshave either a narrow or a wide input voltage range. Narrowinputmodules typically have a nominal input voltage of3.3, 5, or 12 V. For systems thAT operATe from a tightlyregulATed input bus—such as those thAT do not use bATterybackup—a narrow-input module is often adequATe sincethe input remains fairly stable.Offering greATer flexibility, wide-input modules operATewithin a range of 7 to 36 V, which includes the popular12- or 24-V industrial bus. This enables a single module tobe used for generATing multiple voltages. These modulesare ideal for industrial controls, HVAC systems, vehicles,medical instrumentATion, and other applicATions thAT usea loosely regulATed distribution bus.
