In recent years, cellular voice networks have transformed into powerful packet-switched access networks for both voice communication and Internet access. Evolving Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks and first Long Term Evolution (LTE) installations now deliver bandwidths of several megabits per second to individual users, and mobile access to the Internet from handheld devices and notebooks is no longer perceived as slower than a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable connection. Bandwidth and capacity demands, however, keep rising because of the increasing number of people using the networks and because of bandwidth-intensive applications such as video streaming. Thus, network manufacturers and network operators need to find ways to continuously increase the capacity and performance of their cellular networks while reducing the cost.

From the transition of analog to digital communication along with seamless mobility and high computing power of small handheld devices, the wireless communications industry has seen tremendous changes leading to the integration of several telecommunication networks, devices and services over last 30 years. The rate of this progress and growth has increased particularly in the past decade because people no longer use their devices and networks for voice only, but demand bundle contents such as data download/streaming, HDTV, HD video , 3D video conferencing with higher efficiency, seamless connectivity, intelligence, reliability and better user experience. Although the challenges facing service providers and telecommunication companies differ by product, region, market size, and their areas of concentration but time to market, efficient utilization of their assets and revenue expansion, have impacted significantly how to manage and conduct their business while maintaining sufficient margin.

Duringthe past years, there has been a quickly rising interest in radio access technologies for providing mobile as well as nomadic and fixed services for voice, video, and data. This proves that the difference in design, implementation, and use between telecom and datacom technologies is also becoming more blurred. What used to be a mobile phone used for voice communication is today increasingly becoming the main data communication device for end-users, providing web browsing, social networking, and many other services.

The rapid growth in mobile communications has led to an increasing demand for wide- band high data rate communications services. In recent years, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) has emerged as a promising candidate for future (beyond 3G or 4g) mobile communications, as illustrated by projects such as FRAMES and FuTURE. The architecture of DAS inherits and develops the concepts of pico- or micro-cell systems, where multiple distributed antennas or access points (AP) are connected to and con- trolled by a central unit.

The telecommunications industry is undoubtedly in a period of radical change with the advent of mobile broadband radio access and the rapid convergence of Internet and mobile services. Some of these changes have been enabled by a fundamental shift in the underlying technologies; mobile networks are now increasingly based on a pure Internet Protocol (IP) network architecture. Since the first edition of this book was published in 2009, a multitude of connected devices from eBook readers to smartphones and even Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technologies have all started to benefit from mobile broadband. The sea change over the last few years is only the beginning of a wave of new services that will fundamentally change our economy, our society, and even our environment. The evolution towards mobile broadband is one of the core underlying parts of this revolution and is the focus of this book.

The next-generation wireless broadband technology is changing the way we work, live, learn, and communicate through effective use of state- of-the-art mobile broadband technology. The packet-data-based revolu- tion started around 2000 with the introduction of 1x Evolved Data Only (1xEV-DO) and 1x Evolved Data Voice (1xEV-DV) in 3GPP2 and High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) in 3GPP. The wireless broad- band fourth-generation technology (4g) is an evolution of the packet- based 3G system and provides a comprehensive evolution of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System specifications so as to remain competitive with other broadband systems such as 802.16e (WiMAX)

With the rapid growth in the number of wireless applications, services and devices, using a single wireless technology such as a second generation (2G) and third gener- ation (3G) wireless system would not be efficient to deliver high speed data rate and quality-of-service (QoS) support to mobile users in a seamless way. The next genera- tion wireless systems (also sometimes referred to as Fourth generation (4g) systems) are being devised with the vision of heterogeneity in which a mobile user/device will be able to connect to multiple wireless networks (e.g., WLAN, cellular, WMAN) simultaneously.

To meet the future demand for huge traffic volume of wireless data service, the research on the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems has been undertaken in recent years. It is expected that the spectral and energy efficiencies in 5G mobile communication systems should be ten-fold higher than the ones in the fourth generation (4g) mobile communication systems. Therefore, it is important to further exploit the potential of spatial multiplexing of multiple antennas. In the last twenty years, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna techniques have been considered as the key techniques to increase the capacity of wireless communication systems. When a large-scale antenna array (which is also called massive MIMO) is equipped in a base-station, or a large number of distributed antennas (which is also called large-scale distributed MIMO) are deployed, the spectral and energy efficiencies can be further improved by using spatial domain multiple access. This paper provides an overview of massive MIMO and large-scale distributed MIMO systems, including spectral efficiency analysis, channel state information (CSI) acquisition, wireless transmission technology, and resource allocation.
