  • DAKOTA

Computational models are commonly used in engineering design and scientific discovery activities for simulating complex physical systems in disciplines such as fluid mechanics, structural dynamics, heat transfer, nonlinear structural mechanics, shock physics, and many others. These simulators can be an enormous aid to engineers who want to develop an understanding and/or predictive capability for complex behaviors typically observed in the corresponding physical systems. Simulators often serve as virtual prototypes, where a set of predefined system parameters, such as size or location dimensions and material properties, are adjusted to improve the performance of a system, as defined by one or more system performance objectives. Such optimization or tuning of the virtual prototype requires executing the simulator, evaluating performance objective(s), and adjusting the system parameters in an iterative, automated, and directed way. System performance objectives can be formulated, for example, to minimize weight, cost, or defects; to limit a critical temperature, stress, or vibration response; or to maximize performance, reliability, throughput, agility, or design robustness. In addition, one would often like to design computer experiments, run parameter studies, or perform uncertainty quantification (UQ). These approaches reveal how system performance changes as a design or uncertain input variable changes. Sampling methods are often used in uncertainty quantification to calculate a distribution on system performance measures, and to understand which uncertain inputs contribute most to the variance of the outputs. A primary goal for Dakota development is to provide engineers and other disciplinary scientists with a systematic and rapid means to obtain improved or optimal designs or understand sensitivity or uncertainty using simulationbased models. These capabilities generally lead to improved designs and system performance in earlier design stages, alleviating dependence on physical prototypes and testing, shortening design cycles, and reducing product development costs. In addition to providing this practical environment for answering system performance questions, the Dakota toolkit provides an extensible platform for the research and rapid prototyping of customized methods and meta-algorithms

  • High+Voltage+Protection

This book is intended to help electric power and telephone company personnel and individuals interested in properly protecting critical tele communications circuits and equipment located in high voltage (HV) environments and to improve service reliability while maintaining safe working conditions. Critical telecommunications circuits are often located in HV environments such as electric utility power plants, substations, cell sites on power towers, and standalone telecommuni cations facilities such as 911 call centers and mountaintop telecom munications sites.

  • Interference+Mitigation+Techniques

This research work aims at eliminating the off-chip RF SAW filters from fre- quency division duplexed (FDD) receivers. In the first approach, a monolithic passive RF filter was constructed using on-chip capacitors and bondwire inductors. The bond- wire characteristics were studied in details and the effect of mutual inductive coupling between the bondwires on the filter performance was analyzed. Based on that, a bond- wire configuration was proposed to improve the frequency response of the filter. The filter was implemented in 0.18 µm CMOS process for WCDMA applications.

  • Low Complexity MIMO Detection

In order to improve the spectral efficiency in wireless communications, multiple antennas are employed at both transmitter and receiver sides, where the resulting system is referred to as the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. In MIMO systems, it is usually requiredto detect signals jointly as multiple signals are transmitted through multiple signal paths between the transmitter and the receiver. This joint detection becomes the MIMO detection.

  • LTE-Advanced+Relay+Technology

LTE-Advanced becomes a truly global standard for 4G cellular communications. Relay, as one of the key technologies of LTE-Advanced, can significantly extend the coverage, and improve the system throughput. LTE-A standards and tech- nologies were described in several recent books where the limited pages for relay feature prevent the detailed explanations of the technology. In this book, we tried to provide an in-depth description of LTE-A relay development. More specifically, significant portions are spent on relay channel modeling and potential technologies during the study item phase of the development, although some of those tech- nologies, such as Type 2 cooperative relay, multi-hop relay, relay with backhaul of carrier aggregation, were not standardized in Release 10 LTE.

  • Optical+Communications+Essentials

Ever since ancient times, people continuously have devised new techniques and technologies for communicating their ideas, needs, and desires to others. Thus, many forms of increasingly complex communication systems have appeared over the years. The basic motivations behind each new one were to improve the transmission fidelity so that fewer errors occur in the received message, to increase the transmission capacity of a communication link so that more infor- mation could be sent, or to increase the transmission distance between relay sta- tions so that messages can be sent farther without the need to restore the signal fidelity periodically along its path.

  • Propagation Channel Characterization

The investigation of the propagation channel is becoming more and more important in mod- ern wireless communication. The demand for spectral efficiency motivates exploitation of all channels that can possibly be used for communications. Nowadays, a common trend for designing physical layer algorithms is to adapt the transceiving strategy, either by maximizing the diversity gains or by utilizing the coherence of the channels to improve the signal-to-noise power ratio.

  • Understanding_the_Basics_of_MIMO

An acronym for Multiple-In, Multiple-Out, MIMO communication sends the same data as several signals simultaneously through multiple antennas, while still utilizing a single radio channel. This is a form of antenna diversity, which uses multiple antennas to improve signal quality and strength of an RF link. The data is split into multiple data streams at the transmission point and recombined on the receive side by another MIMO radio configured with the same number of antennas. The receiver is designed to take into account the slight time difference between receptions of each signal, any additional noise or interference, and even lost signals.

  • Cognitive+Radio+Networks

Resource allocation is an important issue in wireless communication networks. In recent decades, cognitive radio technology and cognitive radio-based networks have obtained more and more attention and have been well studied to improve spectrum utilization and to overcomethe problem of spectrum scarcity in future wireless com- munication systems. Many new challenges on resource allocation appear in cogni- tive radio-based networks. In this book, we focus on effective solutions to resource allocation in several important cognitive radio-based networks, including a cogni- tive radio-basedopportunisticspectrum access network, a cognitiveradio-basedcen- tralized network, a cognitive radio-based cellular network, a cognitive radio-based high-speed vehicle network, and a cognitive radio-based smart grid.
