This work titled A Digital Phase Locked Loop based Signal and Symbol Recovery System for Wireless Channel is intended to serve as a document covering funda- mental concepts and application details related to the design of digital phase locked loop (DPLL) and its importance in wireless communication. It documents some of the work done during the last few years covering rudimentary design issues, complex implementations, and fixing configuration for a range of wireless propa- gation conditions.

Today, a great variety of technical publications offer background information about these technologies but they all fall short in one way or another. Books covering these technologies usually describe only one of the systems in detail and are generally too complex as a first introduction. The Internet is also a good source, but the articles one finds are usually too short and super- ficial or only deal with a specific mechanism of one of the systems. For this reason, it was difficult for me to recommend a single publication to students in my telecommunication classes, which I have been teaching in addition to my work in the wireless telecommunication industry. This book aims to change this.

This book was conceived in such a special way. From our experience, and despite the increasing interest that we perceived amongst the research community in HAPS, there was not any book in the market entirely devoted to HAPS. We could only find some satellite communications books including only fragments related to HAPS, covering the ‘generalities’. A need for a reference book which could highlight state- of-the-art HAPS-related topics was therefore envisaged. Moreover, most of the information related to HAPS could only be found in technical reports, official recommendations, conference proceedings and journal papers.

Radio propagation measurements and channel modelling continue to be of fundamental importance to radio system design. As new technology enables dynamic spectrum access and higher data rates, radio propagation effects such as shadowing, the presence of multipath and frequency dispersion are the limiting factors in the design of wireless communication systems. While there are several books covering the topic of radio propagation in various frequency bands, there appears to be no books on radio propagation measurements, which this book addresses at length.

This effort started as an answer to the numerous questions the authors have repeatedly had to answer about electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and input/output (1/0) designs. In the past no comprehensive book existed suffi- ciently covering these areas, and these topics were rarely taught in engineering schools. Thus first-time I/O and ESD protection designers have had consider- able trouble getting started. This book is in part an answer to such needs.
