LTE-Advanced becomes a truly global standard for 4G cellular communications. Relay, as one of the key technologies of LTE-Advanced, can significantly extend the coverage, and improve the system throughput. LTE-A standards and tech- nologies were described in several recent books where the limited pages for relay feature prevent the detailed explanations of the technology. In this book, we tried to provide an in-depth description of LTE-A relay development. More specifically, significant portions are spent on relay channel modeling and potential technologies during the STUDY item phase of the development, although some of those tech- nologies, such as Type 2 cooperative relay, multi-hop relay, relay with backhaul of carrier aggregation, were not standardized in Release 10 LTE.

his research aims at creating broadband tunable, fully integrated filters for the application of cognitive radio and signal classification receivers. The approach under STUDY is the N-path filter technique which is capable of translating a baseband impedance to a reference frequency creating a tunable filter. The traditional N-path filter suffers from fundamental architectural limitations, namely : a trade-off between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection, reference clock feed- through, and jammer power handling limitations. In the first approach, the fundamental trade- off of the traditional N-path filter between insertion loss and out-of-band rejection is improved by a transmission line (T-line) N-path filter technique.

The serious STUDY of the practice of how to determine the appropriate content of a specification is a seldom-appreciated pastime. Those who have the responsibility to design a product would prefer a greater degree of freedom than permitted by the con- tent of a specification. Many of those who would manage those who would design a product would prefer to allocate all of the project funding and schedule to what they consider more productive labor. These are the attitudes, of course, that doom a project to defeat but they are hard to counter no matter how many times repeated by design engineers and managers. A system engineer who has survived a few of these experiences over a long career may retire and forget the past but we have an endur- ing obligation to work toward changing these attitudes while trying to offer younger system engineers a pathway toward a more sure success in requirements analysis and specification publishing.
