The sum of a rectangle is the sum of all the elements in that rectangle. In this problem the sub-rectangle with the largest sum is referred to as the maximal sub-rectangle.

A major goal of this book is to show to make devices that are inherently reliable by design. While a lot of attention has been given to “quality improvement,” the majority of the emphasis has been placed on the processes that occur after the design of a product is complete. Design deficiencies are a significant problem, and can be exceedingly difficult to identify in the field. These types of quality problems can be addressed in the design phase with relatively little effort, and with far less expense than will be incurred later in the process. Unfortunately, there are many hardware designers and organizations that, for various reasons, do not understand the significance and expense of an unreliable design. The design methodology presented in this text is intended to address this problem.

The main file in this list of programs is "vblast.m". Type "help vblast" on the command line for details.Study the coding by stepping through the program. Recent advances in experimental methods have resulted in the generation of enormous volumes of data across the life sciences. Hence clustering and classification techniques that were once predominantly the domain of ecologists are now being used more widely. This book provides an overview of these important data analysis methods, from long-established statistical methods to more recent machine learning techniques. It aims to provide a framework that will enable the reader to recognise the assumptions and constraints that are implicit in all such techniques. Important generic issues are discussed first and then the major families of algorithms are described. Throughout the focus is on explanation and understanding and readers are directed to other resources that provide additional mathematical rigour when it is required. Examples taken from across the whole of biology, including bioinformatics, are provided throughout the book to illustrate the key concepts and each technique’s potential.
