Each of us is interested in optimization, and telecommunications. Via several meetings, conferences, chats, and OTHER opportunities, we have discovered these joint interests and decided to put together this book.

When thinking about mobile radio engineers there is a tendency to assume that the engineering function relates solely to the technical aspects of the network, such as the equipment design or the network design. That is certainly a key part of the role of a mobile radio engineer. However,increasinglyengineersarerequiredtointeractwithprofession- als from OTHER divisions. The “complete wireless professional” should know about mobile networks; fixed networks; OTHER types of mobile systems; regulatory and government policy; the requirements of the users; and financial, legal, and marketing issues.

Some tine ago it become apparent the the first edition of this book was rapidly approaching its sell-by date, since many aspects needed revise. There were two obvious courses of action : to forget the whole thing and concentrate my energies on OTHER pursuits such as golf or fishing, or to embark on a new edition. For several reasons Iwas persuaded that a new edition was a worthwhile endeavour;many people had made complimentary remakrs or written complinentary letters about the first edition and I understood that it had become a recommended text for several postgraduate coures.

Recent advances in wireless communication technologies have had a transforma- tive impact on society and have directly contributed to several economic and social aspects of daily life. Increasingly, the untethered exchange of information between devices is becoming a prime requirement for further progress, which is placing an ever greater demand on wireless bandwidth. The ultra wideband (UWB) system marks a major milestone in this progress. Since 2002, when the FCC allowed the unlicensed use of low-power, UWB radio signals in the 3.1–10.6GHz frequency band, there has been significant synergistic advance in this technology at the cir- cuits, architectural and communication systems levels. This technology allows for devices to communicate wirelessly, while coexisting with OTHER users by ensuring that its power density is sufficiently low so that it is perceived as noise to OTHER users.

The continuing explosive growth in mobile communication is demanding more spectrally efficient radio access technologies than the prevalent second generation (2G) systems such as GSM to handle just the voice traffic. We are already witnessing high levels of mobile penetration exceeding 70% in some countries. It is anticipated that by 2010 more than half of all communications will be carried out by mobile cellular networks. On the OTHER hand, the information revolution and changing life habits are bringing the requirement of commu- nicating on a multimedia level to the mobile environment. But the data handling capabilities and flexibility of the 2G cellular systems are limited.

Having dealt with in-depth analysis of SS#7, GSM and GPRS networks I started to monitor UTRAN interfaces approximately four years ago. Monitoring interfaces means decoding the data captured on the links and analysing how the different data segments and messages are related to each OTHER. In general I wanted to trace all messages belonging to a single call to prove if the network elements and protocol entities involved worked fine or if there had been failures or if any kind of suspicious events had influenced the normal call proceeding or the call’s quality of service. Cases showing normal network behaviour have been documented in Kreher and Ruedebusch (UMTS Signaling. John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, 2005), which provides examples for technical experts investigating call flows and network procedures.

The information age is exploding around us, giving us access to dizzying amounts of data the instant it becomes available. Smart phones and tablets provide an untethered experience that offers stream- ing video, audio, and OTHER media formats to just about any place on the planet. Even people who are not “computer literate” use Facebook to catch up with friends and family, use Google to research a new restaurant choice and print directions to get there, or Tweet their reactions once they have sampled the fare. The budding Internet-of-things will only catalyze this data eruption. The infrastructure supporting these services is also growing exponentially, and the technology that facilitates this rapid growth is virtualization.

Wireless networking is undergoing a transformation from what has been primarily a medium for supporting voice traffic between telephones, into what is increasingly becoming a medium for supporting traffic among a variety of digital devices transmitting media of many types (voice, data, images, video. etc.) Wireline networking underwent a similar transformation in the 1990s, which led to an enormous build-up in the capacity of such networks, primarily through the addition of new optical fiber, switches and OTHER infrastructure.

A wireless ad-hoc network is a wireless network deployed without any infrastructure. In such a network, there is no access point or wireless router to forward messages among the computing devices. Instead, these devices depend on the ad-hoc mode of their wireless net‐ work interface cards to communicate with each OTHER. If the nodes are within the transmis‐ sion range of the wireless signal, they can send messages to each OTHER directly. OTHERwise, the nodes in between will forward the messages for them. Thus, each node is both an end system and a router simultaneously.
