We show in the context of a new Economic geography model that when labor is heterogenous trade liberalization may lead to industrial agglomeration and inter-regional trade. Labor heterogeneity gives local monopoly power to firms but also introduces variations in the quality of the job match. Matches are likely to be better when there are more firms and workers in the local market, giving rise to an agglomeration force which can offset the forces against, trade costs and the erosion of monopoly power. We derive analytically a robust agglomeration equilibrium and illustrate its properties with numerical simulations

This book was born from the perception that there is much more to spectrum use and sharing than one sees reflected in publications, whether academic, commercial or political. the former – in good research style – tend towards reductionism and concentrate on specific, detailed aspects. commercial publications tend to empha- size the positive aspects and they tend to put promise above practice. Given the ever increasing pace of technology development and recent successes of new wireless technologies, some pundits predict large-scale spectrum scarcity, potentially lead- ing to Economic catastrophe. Although Economic theory has a hard time explaining recent events that shook the world economy, the notion of spectrum scarcity is intui- tively acceptable, even if not correct or immediately relevant.

Its primary purpose is to encourage, nourish and maintain competition in national and international telecommunications services markets. It is, therefore, a fundamental feature of the legal and commercial landscape within which network owners and service providers operate. Wireless communications has become a field of enormous scientific and Economic interest. Recent success stories include 2G and 3G cellular voice and data services (e.g., GSM and UMTS), wireless local area networks (WiFi/IEEE 802.11x), wireless broadband access (WiMAX/IEEE 802.16x), and digital broadcast systems (DVB, DAB, DRM). On the physical layer side, traditional designs typically assume that the radio channel remains constant for the duration of a data block. However, researchers and system designers are increasingly shifting their attention to channels that may vary within a block. In addition to time dispersion caused by multipath propagation, these rapidly time-varying channels feature frequency dispersion resulting from the Doppler effect. They are, thus, often referred to as being “doubly dispersive.”

Recent advances in wireless communication technologies have had a transforma- tive impact on society and have directly contributed to several Economic and social aspects of daily life. Increasingly, the untethered exchange of information between devices is becoming a prime requirement for further progress, which is placing an ever greater demand on wireless bandwidth. The ultra wideband (UWB) system marks a major milestone in this progress. Since 2002, when the FCC allowed the unlicensed use of low-power, UWB radio signals in the 3.1–10.6GHz frequency band, there has been significant synergistic advance in this technology at the cir- cuits, architectural and communication systems levels. This technology allows for devices to communicate wirelessly, while coexisting with other users by ensuring that its power density is sufficiently low so that it is perceived as noise to other users.
