单纤双向即BiDi（Bidirectional），是指在一根光纤里可以同时传输收发两个方向的光信号，就象马路上由隔离带隔开的正反两个方向的车道，两边的车辆在各自的车道上行驶，互不干扰。而常规的光纤传输是单纤单向的，这样要实现双向的通信就需要两根光纤。相比较而言，单纤双向技术只使用一根光纤就完成了原来两根光纤才能完成的工作，将现有光纤的传输量提高了一倍，从而大大节省了光纤资源。
