<P>This book is for anyone who is interested in algorithms and applications of signal processing using Java. In this age of multimedia, that includes <I>many</I> programmers. Signal processing stands at the intersection of the frontiers of mathematics, scientific computing, and computer science. The programmer who buys this book probably has some programming experience and some mathematical maturity. Even those who skip the math will be rewarded by the Java capabilities that this book offers.</P>
<P>This book is our attempt to make up for some of things that make signal processing in Java hard. It’s hard because the standard Java API is missing some key features. As a result, programmers have difficulty getting started in basic signal processing tasks.</P>
<P>This book contributes the DiffCAD program with all source code, containing more than 180 Java files and classes used to make a single programming environment. We also include complete source code, including original class libraries for the following:</P>

<DD><B>•</B> Reading and writing Sun AU audio files
<DD><B>•</B> Displaying waveforms using a digital oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer

<DD><B>•</B> Batch file processing, including a Java, C, and C++ to HTML converter
<DD><B>•</B> Color conversion and raster to line segment conversion software
<DD><B>•</B> Saving window contents to object PICT files (not bitmaps)
<DD><B>•</B> Performing geometric and far-field diffraction
<DD><B>•</B> Performing geometric image processing

<P>This book is a result of a series of lectures given by Dr. Douglas Lyon, Director of the Image Sequence Processing Laboratory, at the University of Bridgeport. The courses formed a graduate-level computer science sequence in Java programming. The lectures for the course are transcribed into HTML and appear on the book’s CD-ROM.
