Of course on academic issues! <br>
  <br>
In the first letter, you may give him/her a relatively brief self- <br>
  portrait(resume alike) showing your main achievements and your <br>
  resolution to be one of his PhD students. You should make your <br>
  letter both attractive and persuasive. <br>
  <br>
If the professor replies to you, congratulations! The following "tricks" <br>
  are possiblly suggested: <br>
  (1) answer every letter from Prof immedietely! <br>
  (2) tell him the main progress in your research and/or study; <br>
  (3) tell him your ideas on the new articals appeared in recent <br>
      professional journals, especially on those in his strong thrusts; <br>
  (4) Tell him some INTERESTING matters occurred in China and/or on <br>

      yourself (no political or religious issues); <br>
  (5) Tell him your application status when receiving information <br>
      from Grad School or departmental secretary; <br>
  (6) Send relevant greetings on every relevant occasions( par example, <br>
      Thanksgiving, Xmas, etc, but not for St Valentine's Day) <br>
  (7) As for the frequencies, be rational. What really counts is that <br>
      every letter you send him can provide new and interesting info <br>
      instead of just cliche like " I wanna be your student. Can you <br>
      give me full support?'. <br>
  (8) More detailed info can be available in Jing1Hua2Ban3 on Tshinghua BBS. <br>
In short, be concise, polite, personal as well as in time. Good luck! <br>
