If you want to work with a specific professor as your Ph.D. advisor, you sho
uld definitely contact that person. He or she could be a very valuable ally
to you in the formal application process -- by giving you application tips,
advice and putting in a good work for you to the committee that decides. Of,
if he or she thinks you might be better suited to a Ph.D. program elsewhere
, the professor could help you with that. Either way, it's definitely good t
o let real individuals (as opposed to anonymous application committees) know
you and your goals.
But if I do not know any individuals, should I just look through the website
, and try to find a professor, then E-mail him to introduce myself??
How can you be attractive in the heart of a professor? You must be perseveri
ng and pray for good luck.
I think the first step is to choose a target. I was told that it was better
to contact the professors and associate professors. So in each university, y
ou select one faulty whose research field matches your interest by looking t
hrough their home pages.
Then send e-mail to introduce yourself. Don't be too specific about your int
erest. Otherwise this professor cannot recommend you to another one, in case
himself doesn't accept you. If you have enough fortune, you will catch a pr
ofessor's eyes in this way. But I know that some professors let their studen
ts read this kind of e-mail, therefore, mailing letters or post cards direct
ly to your target is also applicable, which seems more sincere.
Anyway, there is so many things undetermined in the application process. Try
to think out unique strategies as much as possible. Maybe one method makes
you be outstanding.
You can look for suitable professors in two ways:
1. look at school's websites to learn about faculty and their interests.
2. Go to a very good bookstore that carries American ACADEMIC (very importan
t!) books and look for English-language scholarly books on your subject. The
n use these to see WHO is writing, researching and publishing in your field
of interest. If books have been published recently, they often identify wher
e the scholars who wrote them currently teach. If English bookstores are not
available to you could easily search this online at Amazon.com or at Americ
an university presses websites. Some very good academic publishers to search
online are: The University of Chicago Press; Yale University Press; Princet
on University Press; Harvard University Press, University of California Pres
s; Duke University Press.
