Make An Eye-catching Resume (1)
Why Many American Flight Attendants Are Not So Young?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
By Jessie Liu, BeBeyond, San Jose, California
A year ago, one of my coworkers from my previous job called me from China. H
e was looking for an opportunity to work in the US and wanted me to revise h
is resume. I said, all right. Although I am not an expert in resume writing,
I believed I had produced a quality resume for myself and used it to land m
y first job in America.
My friend e-mailed his resume to me and it started:
Name: xxxx
Gender: male
Age: 34
Marital Status: Married
Health condition: Good
I couldn't help laughing. I remember that after I graduated from college, I
used to carry a resume similar to his. It was okay for job applying in China
, even with those foreign companies in China. That was a typical Chinese res
ume somewhat like an application form for the Chinese Youth League.
In the US, age, gender, race, health condition, and marital status are the a
spects that employers should care the least. US laws forbid employers from a
sking such personal questions and basing their hiring decision on such quali
fications. If they do, they are discriminating an applicant.
In fact, employers should NOT even ask you whether you have a green card in
their job interview with you. All they can ask is whether you are legally al
lowed to work in the US. Of course, you are because no matter what status yo
u have, your employers can always apply for an appropriate visa that allows
you to work legally. Nevertheless, some employers may still deny you a job b
ecause of your foreign status, but they can never say that they have denied
you because of your status. If they do, you can sue them for job discriminat
ion.
Discrimination is a serious matter in America. That is why if you go to any
of the websites of American companies, you will see statements like "ABC Com
pany is an equal opportunity employer." That is why you will see a lot of fl
ight attendants, not as young as those in China, on American airplanes becau
se American airlines cannot say that they only want to hire young flight att
endants.
So what kind of information should be included in your resume? I will write
about it in my next column. For now, just remember, if your grandma were in
America, she is still eligible for a flight attendant job. Well, I am joking
.
Okay, let's talk about what kind of information should be included in your r
esume: contact information, skill set, working experience, and education.
So, which kind of resume is good? I say a good resume is the one can make th
e hire manager give you a phone call and set up an interview. Do you know ho
w long it takes for the manager to make the decision whether she or he is go
ing to give you a call or just throw your resume into the trash can? 10 seco
nds? 20 seconds? How many resumes he or she received along with yours that d
ay? Hey. You are not anybody special to her/him. Within a minute, she or he
will decide open the door slightly or just keep it close.
So, how are you going to catch her or his attention within 20 seconds? Y
our resume has to be eye-catching. And it has to contain something really in
terests her or him. It's more like a marketing task. You have to sell yourse
lf. Resume is the product introduction. Managers are seeking the problem sol
ving And you have to show that you are the right person he is looking for.
Before start writing your resume, you should take look at the job descri
ption twice and figure out which kind of people they are looking for. Ask yo
urself the following questions:
1. What is the job title? Which kind of role does it play in helping th
e company to achieve its goal?
2. What are the major duties of this job?
3. Which kind of technical skills and other skills required performing
these tasks?
In your resume, you have to show off achievements, attributes and cumul
ating of expertise to the best advantage, in the mean time, minimize the wea
kness. (We are going to provide more detail information on how to phrase it
later)
There are three types of resume:
The chronological resume: a chronological listing of job titles and responsi
bilities. It usually contents the following components: contact information,
a job objective, a career objective, a career summery, education, a descrip
tion of work history.
The functional resume: This format focus on the skills that you developed ov
er the years rather than the context or time of its acquisition. It's totall
y different approach from chronological type, even though you present the sa
me content and the same skills. The advantage of this format is focused and
right to the point. You must have a very clear objective and all the skills
and facts have to illustrate that you can achieve this objective. A function
al resume contains the following elements:
A functional summary: different jobs need different skills. For example, for
a computer engineer's position, you should list all the languages that you
can use: c++, Java, html. If you are applying an analyst position, the follo
wing qualification is required: analytical skills, project management, commu
nication skill, etc.
Dates: you can use year and months instead of mm/dd/yy
Education:
The Combination Chrono-Functional Resume: This format can combine the streng
ths of both chronological and functional. It starts with a career summery. T
o tell people who you are as a professional. It includes a set of descriptio
n of skills, achievements, and personal attributes. The second part would be
the description of functional skills. A chronological history. And then edu
cation.
Personally, I would recommend new graduate to use the Functional resume form
at, because we don't have many track records. For people who already has cer
tain years of working experience and already is an expertise in a particular
field, the combination format may work the best.
In the following columns, we are going to use some resumes as examples of di
fferent formats and share some of secrets of using powerful words to catch t
he attention.
If you want to find a job, communication skill is critical!
