In order to make me more familiar to you, here I'd like to talk about my edu
cational background, academic interests and future plan.
In 1996, waived of the National Examination for Entrance to Universities, I
entered Peking University, the best university in our country. Here, I met a
few leading logicians and philosophers in China. Under their guidance, I ma
de the first step of my academic expedition. In the past three years, like m
ost students in the department, I finished all the required courses of philo
sophy, which gave me access to all kinds of philosophical schools and moveme
nts.
What distinguishes me, however, is my competence in logic and mathematics. M
ajoring in logic, I breezed through the undergraduate courses with exception
al grades. Besides, I took some graduate courses on Modal Theory, Proof Theo
ry and Recursive Theory as well. Thanks to the affinity between mathematics
and logic, I did not find much difficulty in many mathematical courses eithe
r, such as analysis (mathematical and real), algebra (lineal and abstract),
topology, and some discrete mathematics. In those classes, I always ranked t
he first or second out of about 160 students, most of whom are from Departme
nt of Mathematics and Department of Computer Science. The study not only equ
ips me with strong background, but also adds to my interest and confidence i
n mathematics and logic.
Naturally, when handling philosophical issues, I prefer the analytic method.
This does not mean I reject other approaches to philosophy. Every time I re
ad the works of some non-analytic thinkers, especially Nietzsche, Kierkegaar
d and Sartre, I was deeply touched by the wisdom and power displayed in thei
r thoughts and arguments. However, when it is up to me myself to deal with s
ome problems, I cannot help resorting to logical analysis, which I regard as
the most reliable approach. Soundness, in my opinion, is not only crucial t
o mathematics and logic, but also important to philosophy. For this matter,
I admire Frege and Carnap very much.
Unfortunately, as I study the Chinese philosophy, I can hardly find the anal
ytic methodology. The synthetic method of Chinese philosophy does have some
advantages in metaphysics, but many or most Chinese philosophers have gone s
o far in this direction that they seldom adopt the methodology of logical an
alysis. Such situation gives me the feeling that we may expect a revolutiona
ry breakthrough in Chinese philosophy if we import the analytic spirit of th
e West. That's one important reason why I want to get more advanced training
in logic and analytic philosophy in the United States.
To prepare for further study, I paid much attention to analytic philosophy a
nd philosophy of language. The movement of analytic philosophy has gone a lo
ng way in this century. One analytic philosopher may differ, to a considerab
le extent, from another in specific objects and ways of research. However, t
he common and central task of these thinkers that to clarify the meaning of
language, in my opinion, does not change much. When analyzing language, eith
er the language of science or the ordinary language, the methodologies of lo
gic, both semantic and syntactic, play an important role. Furthermore, in li
nguistics and philosophy of language, the research of Formal Semantics is al
so closely related to logic. Thus my strong background in logic and mathemat
ics can help a lot here. Meanwhile such reliance of these fields on logic ex
tends my scope to the philosophy of logic. What is logic? Where lie the foun
dation and boundary of logic? These issues, I think, are also essential in t
he study of the foundations of mathematics. Besides, Philosophical logic is
appealing to me. In my view, it can be a very important approach to metaphys
ics and epistemology.
In addition to those theoretic aspects, I feel quite interested in the appli
ed aspects of logic. I audited some courses in the department of Computer Sc
ience at PKU and in October 1998, I became an assistant of a project on Arti
ficial Intelligence (AI), which is implemented jointly by our department and
the department of Computer Science of USTC (University of Science and Techn
ology of China). The main concern is with Intentional Logic and Cognitive Lo
gic. I learned a lot by participating in it and got to know the importance o
f non-standard logics, such as nonmonotonic logics and dynamic logics. I fee
l that the application of logic in this area is not simply based on logical
theories and methodologies, but at the same time, conducive to the developme
nt of theories. Also curious about Cognitive Science and Decision Theory, I
read some works on Game Theory last year and have thought about the problem
of Multi-subject Cognition and Decision for some time.
In summary, currently my interests lie in the following areas:
(1) Analytic Philosophy, Philosophy of Logic and Philosophical Logic;
(2) Philosophy of Language and Formal Semantics in Linguistics;
(3) Foundations of Mathematics and Logic;
(4) AI and Cognitive Science;
In light of my academic background, I believe I am suitable to work in one o
f these fields. But I also realize that what I have learned is still far fro
m enough to conduct research in depth on these topics. I feel compelled to g
et some access to advanced theories in these areas and receive specialized a
nd profound training under a scholar, whose work can serve as a model for me
.
Consequently, I find your institution a right place for me. I am happy to se
e that the structure of the program of philosophy at Carnegie Mellon Univers
ity, which provides both width and flexibility, accords well with what I hav
e in mind. The rich tradition in interdisciplinary research of your institut
ion also suits me very well. My ultimate goal is to obtain a scholastic post
in the academic study of philosophy and logic. If I am fortunate enough to
be enrolled in your program, I will hopefully start my career from a high le
vel in the future.
I hope my application will have your serious consideration. Thank you.
