In a humorous word, the relation between theoretical physics and applied phy
sics is somewhat like the relation between dating and marriage. Theoretical
physics is exciting and applied physics is practical but the succeed of the
latter needs a smart sense of the former one. What I gained in PKU is just b
oth the smart sense and the practical experience on space plasma physics. So
what I want in your Plasma Physics Program is just a successful marriage wi
th plasma physics.

? Why did I choose Physics?
Once as a junior middle school student, I was surprised to learn that the fa
mous special theory of relativity is derived from merely two principles. The
simple forms of the two principles reminded me of the simplicity of the pro
cess of the derivation. So I challenged myself with the problem of finding o
ut the process. With some books of the Michelson-Morley experiment borrowed
from the city library, some knowledge of calculus and some ideal experiments
, I finally proved the equation E=M*C*C-M0*C*C. In that year, I was fifteen
years old.

That was my first research experience in my life. Although the answer of tha
t problem is in many books, it was gotten independently by myself. After tha
t experience, whenever I turned to physics, I said: “I love this game!” I
also saw the limit of my knowledge of mathematics from that experience. And
I found it wonderful to read books by myself and to think it over in my own
way. So I learned Methods of Mathematical Physics by myself after I came int
o senior middle school. All this made me the first winner of the Chinese Phy
sics Olympic Competition in the history of our hometown. As a result, I was
admitted into Peking University waived of the entrance examination (a test l
ike SAT in China) and chose Space Physics as the starting of my research car
eer.

? What have I learned in Peking University?

The two most important things I prepared in PKU for my future research work
are two modes of thinking. One is to think in a physical way. The other is t
o think from different perspective. In addition to that, I gained a lot of p
ractical technology and a lot of practical experience to fulfil my objective
.

My strong foundation of mathematics and physics assured the freedom of my ow
n study plan in such a good school as Peking University. I stepped up in my
own way for researching of space plasma physics with many books in physics a
nd mathematics. The three that made the deepest impact on me were: Different
ial Forms in Mathematical Physics by C. Von Westenholz, Principles of Plasma
Physics by Nicholas A. Krall & Alvin W. Trivelpiece and Physical Kinetics b
y E. M. Lifshitz & L. P. Pitaevskii.

The second and third book gave me a basic but systematic map of plasma physi
cs. The first one, which I like the most among the three books, gave me the
ability to link knowledge of contemporary mathematics with physics. I learne
d that physics hides the relations behind the letters and equations and math
ematics helps me to separate and classify relations by different kinds of ma
thematics structure. It’s an extremely charming experience for me to keep a
nother eye on a routine relation or put the question in a broader field. For
a short instance, when I learned plasma physics, I compared the anisotropis
m of plasma with that of crystal in a physical image. I found the reason of
the former is a classical one but the latter is not of the same kind. In pla
sma, the anisotropism comes from the magnetic field. But in crystal, the ani
sotropism comes from the particles in it and can be described as a kind of m
acroscopical spatial quantum effect. That explains the phenomenon of multi-a
xis in crystal and implies to me that if in some condition the quantum effec
t in plasma can’t be neglected, there must be some similar interesting effe
ct. That is just an idea many of which piled up in my mind during my life at
PKU—physical eye on Laplace transform, geometrical eye on determinant, and
so on.

Success in researching is not made merely by a mind full of “another”. Wit
hout being realized, an idea is only an idea. In my life in PKU, I trained m
yself with many practical technique and painstaking work. As a former first-
class honor winner of competition of computer programming in our province in
middle school, I greatly strengthened my programming skill and debugging sk
ill in PKU. I also benefit greatly from my social commitment. All these can
be seen on my Résumé. They ensured my outstanding academy record and allow
ed me to win many honors.

Moreover, I took part in a lot of research work. For my excellent performanc
e, I was recommended to a joint education program between our department and
.
. Some research (introduction briefly)
.
.
All these experience have worked greatly to improve my practical experien
ce.

? What do I want in Princeton University?
My wide research in space physics strongly focused my attention to theoretic
al plasma physics. I learned from the information of PPPL that Princeton Uni
versity possessed an excellent research and education system for both theore
tical and experimental plasma physics. The courses of your program and resea
rch projects especially of theoretical plasma physics greatly attract me at
first glance. For example the course Irreversible Processes in Plasmas will
greatly help solving the problem of heating of solar wind, which has been a
hot topic in space physics. As known to me, researching of the nonlinear phe
nomena is very hot in the theoretical plasma physics researching. Succeed in
that field need a strong background both in analytic area and in computatio
nal area. The course list in your program showed the emphasizing on that. Th
at’s just the most important reason for my applying for your program. With
the strict training in your program, the physical sense I’ve gotten and the
background in space plasma physics, I think my researching in the field of
theoretical plasma physics will sure be promising.
