I hope I'll become a prominent professor and researcher of Architecture in C <br>
hina in the new millennium. Through a systematic study, my purpose in pursui <br>
ng a Ph.D. is to obtain both theoretical abilities and applicable skills on <br>
a higher level. Among the concentrations of your Ph.D. program of Architectu <br>
re, I have great interests in the field of Urban Design. <br>
Urban places require design, guidance and careful management to facilitate b <br>
oth a high quality of life and more resource-sensitive environments. In Chin <br>
a, urban design emerged as an independent discipline only recently. Fortunat <br>
ely, more and more attention has been paid to it. As a result of changes in <br>
the business and economic sectors, Chinese cities are renovating and expandi <br>
ng at an unprecedented pace. Under these circumstances, professionals who ca <br>
n deal creatively with urban design problems within existing cities and at t <br>
he growth edge of metropolis are in great demand. Land use law and related r <br>
egulations are also under considerable revision. <br>
As an architect and researcher in the Architectural Design and Research Inst <br>
itute of Tongji University, I have gained much experience through my involve <br>
ment in urban design projects. In these projects, such as Nanjing Road Re-De <br>
velopment, we were confronted with some challenging problems. Nanjing Road i <br>
s the most famous commercial district with a history of over 150 years and i <br>
s regarded as "Architecture Symposium of the world" because of its variety o <br>
f architectural styles. The urban design is initiated from the restudy of th <br>
e special context of the district. Based on this analysis, I explored how to <br>
develop new cultural and commercial functions while conserving its historic <br>
al heritage on both the formal and political aspects. <br>
These practical experiences greatly stimulated me to further my study in the <br>
area of urban design. Particularly, I have great interest in the issues con <br>
cerning revitalization and redevelopment of traditional downtown. This subje <br>
ct is especially meaningful to the developing nations with rich cultural her <br>
itages, like China. <br>
The Ph.D. program of architecture at university of Pennsylvania has worldwid <br>
e reputation. The faculty in the area of urban design is especially strong. <br>
The rich academic atmosphere and varieties of exhibitions and lectures there <br>
will put me in touch with the world's cutting edge of architecture. Further <br>
more, its location in Philadelphia will provide me with a unique perspective <br>
on the challenges facing US urban areas in the 21st Century. <br>
I have a strong background in architecture and a significant experience of t <br>
he East Asian region. I received my Master of Architecture degree as an hono <br>
red graduate from Tongji University, which has the most prestigious architec <br>
ture programs in China. During my study there, I took great interest in publ <br>
ic policy and urban development issues. I achieved deeper understanding of u <br>
rban design through my professional career as an architect at one of the top <br>
most architectural institutes in China. Built on my solid academic backgroun <br>
d and practical experience, the proposed Ph.D. education will provide me wit <br>
h a broader view and exceptional creativity in seeking alternative solutions <br>
of the dilemmas of contemporary China. <br>
In the coming century, I would like to serve my nation as a professor and re <br>
search in Architecture. To be more competitive in such a multi-dimensional f <br>
ield, Ph.D. study in architecture is the key. <br>
