Personal Statement
ztt
Brief Introduction

Ever since my childhood, I kept trying to figure out how this world comes i
nto its current being. Is there an Almighty Being, or some other things? Un
til I got to meet with chemistry, had I not found the reasonable answer to t
his question. In this marvelous world of chemistry, I was amazed by the fact
that so many sorts of materials are made from such a few kinds of atoms. Mo
re interestingly, there is one kind of magic material---polymer, which is co
mposed of even thousands or millions of monomers. I was deeply attracted as
soon as I knew its spectacular properties. Later in 1995, when I entered Zhe
jiang University waived of Entrance Exam for my first-class prize in the Nat
ional Chemistry Olympic Games, I chose the Department of Polymer Science and
Engineering as my major.
Further, I was luckily selected as one member in Mixed Class, which is a spe
cified training "Department" which chooses its members from top students of
all engineering departments in my university. During the two years there, I
learned various courses related to nearly all majors such as math, physics,
computer science etc. When I graduated from Mixed Class after two years' stu
dy and returned to the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, I bega
n to learn the major courses, such as Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Physics, Po
lymer Materials etc. As I got my BS degree in 1999, I chose to stay in my de
partment and continue with the postgraduate study for master degree. During
the following two years, I focused on the use of rare earth catalysts in pol
ymer chemistry.
During my research work, I came to have more and more interest with polymer
materials, which is attractive in the current and future use by human kind.
So, as I will graduate in next spring with my MS degree, I decided to apply
for the admission from the Material Science Department in California Institu
te of Technology. I sincerely believed it would be a crucial step for me to
advance towards my academic achievements in the future.

What a person I am

My optimism is the first specific character I'd like to mention. I never giv
e up before the final hope disappears. This helped me to keep patience durin
g the exploration of biologically-degradable polymer materials, when unexpec
ted difficulties are often confronted. Finally, my colleagues and I confirme
d polymerization of DTC by samarium (II) system and are currently writing a
paper on this work.
Perseverance is the second important character of mine. If I made up my mind
to finish something, I will always try my best to deal with this affair. St
ill as an undergraduate student, I participated in the research project of P
olymerization of 1,4-Butadiene by Novel Catalysts of Rare Earth Calixarene C
ompounds and did most of the experimental work. So many technical problems w
ere met for my shortage of necessary experiment skills at that time. I often
consulted my director and colleagues and insisted on. Finally, this work wa
s successfully accomplished and it was academically published in the Chemica
l Journal of Chinese Universities (SCI) 2000, 21, 1936-38.
Resolute as I am, I'm not an inflexible person. On the contrary, adaptabilit
y is another notable character on me. The systematic math education, which I
received in Mixed Class, always assists me to do well in analyzing the over
all condition and finding shortcut to the solution. In my previous work of p
olymerization of acrylonitrile by samarium diiode, which has been provisiona
lly accepted as a communication by Macromolecular Rapid Communication, I did
n't mean to search for its mechanism at first. During the course of looking
up in related papers, I began to pay attention to the possibility of discuss
ing polymerization mechanism and finished it in my paper satisfactorily at l
ast.
The last, but not least, thing to mention is my communication skills. I'm ex
perienced with cooperating with others in team work and likely to be accepte
d by my colleagues. My humor and versatility always get myself welcomed by m
y friends.

Why I decide to apply for admission of California Institute of Technology an
d Material Science Department

Frankly speaking, maybe CIT is not the biggest or most traditional universi
ty in US. But based on the reasons listed below, I resolutely decide to appl
y for admission of Material Science Department in CIT:
1. Though CIT only has a history of 110 years since its founding in 1891, it
's quite a pragmatic institute adapting accordingly to change. This helps it
s faculties and graduate students to get aware of the latest developments in
their areas all around the world and rapidly accommodate those promising pr
ojects.
2. During my work and everyday life, I often found there are some important
findings or milestones related with the name of CIT, such as finding of Vita
min C and creating of molecular biology. I am very confident that one day my
name would be linked with some findings in my field as well and I sincerely
hope my study career in CIT is also an important reason for my success.
3. During my postgraduate career here for master degree in Zhejiang Universi
ty, China, I have dealt for 2 and a half years with the polymerization of se
veral kinds of monomers using rare earth catalysts. I came to realize that t
op facilities and financial support are very critical to the achievements on
experiments. And this is an obvious privilege of CIT, which could provide t
he best objective support from the school and the best guidance from the out
standing faculties there.

Summary

According to the words and quotations above, I believe you have got a rough
impression about me as well as my application for admission of Material Sci
ence Department in California Institute of Technology. I sincerely hope you
could give a serious consideration about my application.
