Abstract: Firstly, my reasons for pursuing Ph.D are explained. Secondly, my
academic background was stated in terms of my roles in the group and my own
contribution. Finally, my intended field is presented.

Key words: Ph.D Background Intended field

My reason for pursuing Ph. D degree keeps close contact with my aspiration t
o be a research scientist. When pondering my future in 1998, I think it is t
he best policy for me to contribute my knowledge of semiconductor materials
and applications to the microelectronic industry of my motherland. For so, I
need to further my studies in a qualified Ph.D. program specializing in sem
iconductor materials and applications. The department of Electrical and comp
uter Engineering at Maryland University is well known for its contribution t
o the semiconductor applications. And more importantly, in my view, its coll
aboration experience with enterprise makes a clear way for the development o
f Chinese microelectronic research. These are just the reasons I am applying
to Maryland University.

In my mind, I want to join the Microelectronic Device Lab of ECE department
because I have cultivated a strong interest in this area during my graduate
study. After receiving the B.E degree of Materials Science and Engineering a
t Zhejiang University1 in 1998, I joined the State Key Laboratory of Silicon
Materials, one of China’s best institutions devoted to researches in semic
onductor materials, for my graduate studies. During the first year as a mast
er candidature, I took courses like Physics of Solid States, Characterizatio
n Techniques of Semiconductor Materials, Physics Theory of Semiconductors, e
tc. I benefited from these courses for further academic and research work. S
tarting from September 1998, I focused my research on investigation of thin
films growth by simulation method, as well as assisting to experimentally re
search the growth of SiGe/Si HBT.

In the simulation project, I was responsible for designing algorithm and pro
gramming. Above all, I proposed a 2-dimensional model by Monte Carlo method
in order to make clear the initial stage of thin films growth. Different wit
h methods advised by literature, which estimated the probability of diffusio
n by comparing the energy of activation one by one, I advanced a new method
to solve the time-consuming procedure. Having summed up the energies of aime
d particle with respect to the substrate ones and nearest ones, I deduced pr
obability equations of diffusion in terms of Arrhenius Equation. I used the
equations and random functions to judge whether the particle would move and
which direction it would do. In my view, not only was my method much more ti
mesaving, but also more suitable. After all, movements of particles on subst
rate were random. Probability method was a practical solution. Meanwhile, I
joined the research on the epitaxial growth of Si1-xGex on substrate silicon
by UHV/CVD system, for the sake of evaluating my model and making better un
derstanding of thin films growth. Furthermore, a 3-dimensional model was pro
posed with the graphic user interface, paying specific attention to the grow
th of Si1-xGex films2. Eventually, I was benefited the followings from my wo
rk: (1)Start a new project3, thinking in a way different experimental work;
(2)Make effective collaboration with people from different fields4; (3)apply
knowledge of lectures to practice5; (4) Develop problem-solving skills.
In addition, I paid part attention to design the equipment of MOCVD. It was
my duty to meeting requirements and accomplishing its draft 6. Meanwhile, I
was also the web administrator of my lab.

I am very glad to learn that the Microelectronic Device Lab has the optoelec
tronic device program from IEEE published papers, which is exactly my propos
ed research interest. In my view, the future of SiGe technology appears capa
ble of delivering viable products benefiting from its high speed and ease of
integration with CMOS processes. I do hope my extensive studies, both theor
y and experiment of thin films growth, will do good to my further interests
in SiGe/Si and Heterostructure devices. (I believe your program will provide
me an excellent platform to learn first-hand not only the theoretic and exp
erimental foundations of materials, but also how to bring this knowledge to
fruition in an interactive research setting. This is the main reason why I c
hoose your program for my Ph.D. studies. ) On the other hand, I definitely k
now the future challenge. I am proud of it; Actually, I think facing up with
challenges is the best policy in life. Moreover, I believe, with my intelli
gence, perseverance and diligence, I will surely make a successful Ph.D cand
idate.

With your emphasis on strong interaction between students and faculty, I bel
ieve I can count on your faculty's help while I seek to scale higher intelle
ctual heights and take up greater challenges. This will not only prepare me
for a successful researcher, but also put me in a much better position to se
rve my motherland.)
1 The overall rank of Zhejiang University is No.* in China in 2000.
2 See my CV, please.
3 It was the first time that my director assigned a simulation project in my
lab.
4 I was appreciated the assistance from the departments of Physics Sci.., Co
mputer Sci. and Eng..
5 Such as Mathematic Modeling.
6 For the sake of saving money, the equipment was designed by us. It is manu
factured in Changchun, P.R. China.
