"The business of the law is to make sense of the confusion of what we call
human life—to reduce it to order but at the same time to give it possibilit
y, scope, even dignity."
In 1972, the American poet Archibald MacLeish wrote these words in the Harva
rd Law Review. In 1997, I read these words. At that point, the challenge and
lure of the law crystallized before me, and I now see the ideals of MacLeis
h’s vision as my own.
MacLeish envisions the law as providing a sense of possibility, or hope, and
I identify with this. Coming from a financially disadvantaged childhood, I
had to put forth serious effort in overcoming financial and personal adversi
ty and focusing on the importance of family and education. Without a sense o
f the unlimited possibilities ahead of me, my goals would never have been ta
ken seriously—by myself or by others—and I would not have followed them to
completion. Through my sense of possibility, I took my place on the Honor R
olls for fall 1996 and 1997 at the University of Maryland at Baltimore. I al
so served as vice president for the Pre-Law Club at the University. In addit
ion, the ability to attack my goals with a sense of hope, rather than with t
repidation, led me to found and preside over the Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law cha
pter at UMD, giving me the chance to demonstrate my skills in recruiting, pr
esentation, and organization.
MacLeish wanted the law to provide scope to human life, and I feel similarl
y. I associate the desire for breadth in the law with the growing diversity
in America. As a Filipino-American, I want to contribute to the law and to i
ts need to examine and take account of various viewpoints and identities. I
look forward to providing my individual and cultural thoughts to my peers an
d professors at Yale, and to the consideration of the interpretations of oth
ers. I have tried to extend my range of thought and action before. In additi
on to my academic interests and legal ambitions, I also served in the U.S. A
rmy; I worked to become a Staff Sergeant and Assistant Platoon Sergeant for
the Reserves. This experience allowed me to thrive in an environment of team
work, leadership, and physical and mental strength; and through my relations
hips and responsibilities, my view of the world broadened. I want to continu
e to increase the scope of my thought with study at Yale, as well as contrib
ute the scope I have gained so far.
Finally, MacLeish talks about dignity in the law. I have learned firsthand a
bout dignity in human life through various volunteer efforts. For example, a
s the Volunteer Coordinator for the Voices Volunteer Organization at UMD, I
regularly visit a halfway house located in my old neighborhood for 17- to 21
-year-old males. By serving as a positive role model and through individual
mentoring, I aim to help these young men see the worth each possesses and wh
ich they must not bury. Similarly, through participation in numerous Habitat
for Humanity construction projects, I have witnessed and felt the dignity i
n communities and low-income families building sturdy homes. Presently, I wo
rk part-time for Disability Services of the Northeast as an attendant for th
e disabled. Because the goal for these patients is to become as independent
as possible, the sustaining of their personal dignity is extremely important
in my job. In the future, through the study and practice of law, I will kee
p up my contribution to the dignity of human life.
Archibald MacLeish’s quote about law pertains significantly to both my past
accomplishments and my aspirations to become an attorney. I feel these idea
ls will serve me well in pursuing my interest in Administrative law. As a ma
ture and focused student and leader, I am ready to study the law at Yale, an
d I am ready to contribute to its possibility, scope, and dignity.
