PROLOGUE <br>
When I was just a little girl, my father, the first teacher of mine, a senio <br>
r electrical engineer, led me into a fascinating world. There were various e <br>
lectronic components, exciting magnetic phenomena and moving episodes about <br>
the pioneers in this field. That is what has attracted, is attracting and wi <br>
ll attract me --Electrical Engineering, and it has provided me a career to w <br>
hich I will dedicate my intelligence and energy. <br>
PREVIOUS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE <br>
In 1995, I started my college education at the Department of Electrical Engi <br>
neering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University with the third highest scores of al <br>
l the Shanghai candidates and the highest in SJTU. In collage, I always remi <br>
nd myself what Einstein said," Genius is 1% of inspiration and 99% of perspi <br>
ration." I spent most of time in studying. As results of my hard work, I hav <br>
e achieved an outstanding academic record (top 5% among 39 students) and rec <br>
eived several times of Scholarships and honors. The very truth of the theori <br>
es lies in the practices, so I greatly emphasize the combination between the <br>
m, drawing nourishment from the books and then digesting in electrical desig <br>
n and experiment. Although my experience in EE is still limited, I believe i <br>
ts depth is well accessible. As my advisor, Prof. XXX put it figuratively in <br>
one of his lectures:" It makes no difference whether a hunter captures 5 or <br>
7 rabbits. What counts is he knows how to use his gun." <br>
I think I can be the qualified shooter. My paces toward this goal are always <br>
steady. To earn more research practice, I served as RA for the Digital Sign <br>
al Processing Center in 1998. I have been working as the main designer of th <br>
e Image Receiving and Enhancement section in the "Long Distance Still Image <br>
Transmitting System" project. This project has won me the Exceptional Excell <br>
ence Award (3 out of 43) on the Shanghai Challenge Cup Innovative Design Com <br>
petition for college students. East Data Communication Co. has shown great i <br>
nterest in this design and planed to manufacture and market it by the end of <br>
1999. I know prospective graduate education is more than a continuation of <br>
undergraduate study. In this center, I have learned not only knowledge about <br>
advanced experiment skills, but also the most important for a researcher-in <br>
terests and serious attitude in scientific work. In retrospect, my workload <br>
is always heavy, but it is worth my time of effort. <br>
Currently, I'm working for Shanghai ABC Co. as an engineer specialized in wi <br>
reless communication and mobile networking. This field is brand new and prom <br>
ising, full of challenges. Basic principles and procedures of mobile communi <br>
cation system, network optimization, software testing, they all extend my ke <br>
n and provide me with the access to most advanced techniques. Moreover, my c <br>
omputer application ability has been greatly enhanced and I really enjoy the <br>
success after the assiduous work, persevering efforts and cooperation with <br>
others. <br>
WHY I APPLY FOR EE? <br>
Being in the Information Age and digital revolution, I'm constantly fascinat <br>
ed by the sweeping changes that image, audio and video transmission technolo <br>
gy brings to our lives. Advances in signal recognition, encoding, retrieval, <br>
and enhancement allow us to better view, manipulate, store and transmit sun <br>
dry signals with high qualities. However, I also realize the need for improv <br>
ement, and the great potential that lies in the future of digital signal pro <br>
cessing. EE is just such a discipline filled with challenges and prospect. K <br>
nowing where one is heading during navigation brings assured happiness. Inde <br>
ed, having entered this splendid world, I'm more than greedy for the new. <br>
WHY I APPLY FOR XYZ School? <br>
In order to fully realize my dream, I need to pursue an advanced education. <br>
From the college guide and my advisor's recommendation, I'm pleased to learn <br>
that your department has an academic atmosphere where originality is apprec <br>
iated and individual potential is explored. I think the cultural richness of <br>
the place will contribute measurably to my graduate experience. <br>
MY INTEREST FIELDS <br>
With the field of EE, my major interest is in signal processing and wireless <br>
communication. When I worked as RA in DSP Center for "Long Distance Still I <br>
mage Transmitting System," I found that the transmission time is intolerable <br>
and the image quality is not satisfactory. Due to the limited applicable ba <br>
nd, these problems have not been well solved. I always think whether it is p <br>
ossible for us to improve current compression algorithm or design a new one <br>
to increase the compression ratio so that the data rate will be upgraded. On <br>
e more serious question is that this system is only suitable to still images <br>
, what about moving and real-time images? In that case, the contradiction be <br>
tween the band and the huge quantity of data is more obvious and the time de <br>
lay will be much longer. New ways to transmit images with less delay and bet <br>
ter quality, retrieve and enhance images and more efficient compression algo <br>
rithm are waiting to be discovered. It is my interest and goal to further my <br>
learning in these fields. <br>
As for the wireless communication, I have obtained theoretical understanding <br>
and practical experience in the work. Personal communication is the trend f <br>
or the 21st Century, but we are not prepared for introducing the 3rd Generat <br>
ion Mobile Communication System to the market, because there are several tec <br>
hnical problems puzzling us: how to transform the current CDMA into CDMA 200 <br>
0? How to improve the audio quality? How to well perform the hand-off in the <br>
calling? So, if possible, my main interest in the future will be in the fol <br>
lowing areas: <br>
1. Signal Processing <br>
2. Communications <br>
If you feel that I am more suited for some other areas, any of your suggesti <br>
on would be highly appreciated. <br>
EPILOGUE <br>
Upon the completion of my study, I would return to China and make good use o <br>
f my knowledge to server the people. It is my ultimate goal to see the Chine <br>
se communication products leading the global market in the next century. <br>
By the way, I would like to give thanks to my parents. It is they that besto <br>
w me the character of diligence, resolution and perseverance. Without their <br>
never-ended encouragement and support in these years, I could not become clo <br>
ser and closer to the gate of the prestigious XYZ school. <br>
