<P>In developing software for a smart card, there can be a testing and debugging phase between running your smart card program in a simulator and running it on the smart card itself. In this development phase, you run your program on a chip emulator or tester.
</P>
<P>Chip emulators and testers are special-purpose hardware rigs that contain the actual chip in the target smart card, but instrument the chip in such a way that you can still examine the internal state of the chip and single-step your program.</P>
<P>Unfortunately, the capabilities of emulators and testers that make them so useful to software developers also make them very useful to smart card hackers (see Table 6.9). You may encounter some difficulty in getting an emulator or tester for the smart card chip for which you are developing code.</P>
