Installing, uninstalling,and upgrading RPM packages are all one line commands, and all themessy details are taken care of for you. RPM maintains a databaseof installed packages and their files, which allows you to performpowerful queries and verification of your system. During upgradesRPM handles configuration files specially, so that you never loseyour customizations -- a feature that is impossible with straight<tt>.tar.gz</tt> files.<p>For the developer, RPM allows you to take source code for softwareand package it into source and binary packages for end users. Thisprocess is quite simple and is driven from a single file and optionalpatches that you create. This clear delineation of ``pristine''sources and your patches and build instructions eases the maintenanceof the package as new versions of the software are released.<p>At the time of this writing, a book is in the works that fullydocuments RPM, including:building and using packages, configuring RPM, using the RPM libraryin your programs, the RPM file format, and more.
