You may decide to proceed without a JXTA network connection but you will not be able to interact with other peers on the network. </font> <P><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">When the application launches, you will see the myJXTA application. The main screen has menu options that control key functionality of the system and a window divided into three main sections; the Group Manager, the Application Manager, and the Status section. These three sections display the results of the peer session (i.e., chat) as well as providing additional functionality (i.e. Group search). </font> <P><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><img src="images/group.gif" width="600" height="694"> <BR> </font> <P><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B><a name="2.1"></a>2.1 Menu Options</B> </font> <blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>File...</b></font></p> <blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Shell</b>: Launch the JXTA Shell in its own window. The JXTA Shell is an application for advanced users that provides interactive access to the JXTA platform. See http://shell.jxta.org for a description of the JXTA Shell or type "man" in the Shell window for on-screen help. </font></p> <blockquote> <hr> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>NOTE</b>: Exitting the Shell instance launched from myJXTA will also exit the myJXTA application. </font></p> <hr> </blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Create Invite</b>: Create a JXTA invitation (invite file) that is saved on your local file system. An invitation is like a business card that you can send to another myJXTA user to let them know about your peer. The invitation is created for the peergroup that you are currently joined to. Invitations need to be sent (i.e., emailed) to other peers. </font></p> <blockquote> <hr> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>TECHNICAL NOTE</b>: Invite files are JXTA Peer Group advertisements. Refer to the JXTA technical specifications and white papers on <a href="http://www.jxta.org">http://www.jxta.org</a> for more information about JXTA advertisements.</font></p> <hr> </blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Accept Invite</b>: Import a JXTA invitation (invite file) from another user. This will add the peer to the User List of peers known to you in the Secure Chat tab. </font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Exit</b>: Exit from myJXTA </font></p> </blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B>Edit...</B></font></p> <blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B>Auto Share Preferences: </B>Automatically share documents that have been searched and downloaded with myJXTA. This helps distribute shard content among the peers in the peer group so others members can find shared contents more easily. By default, Auto Share is off. </font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B>Save Session</B>: Save the current settings of myJXTA including window size, screen location, and User lists. The settings are saved in a file called "IP2P.properties" which is automatically loaded the each time myJXTA is run. </font></p> </blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Navigation...</b></font></p> <blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Group Chat:</b> Chat with all members in the current peergroup. Messages you type in Group Chat are automatically sent to all members of your current peergroup providing Chat Room functionality. </font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Chat (secure): </b>Chat securely one-to-one with another member in your current peergroup. Multiple one-to-one chat session can be created. Chat messages are encrypted as they are sent over the network so only the person you are chatting with can see your message. </font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B>Search: </B>Search for documents shared by other members in your current peergroup. </font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B>Share: </B>Select files on your local file system you are willing to share with other members of your current peergroup. </font></p> </blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Group...</b></font></p> <blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B>Create New Group: </B>Create a new peer group on the JXTA network. myJXTA allows you to create either a public or private peergroup. Private groups are assigned a secure password by the group creator that is required by all users that want to join the peer group. </font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B>Join Group: </B>Join an existing peer group. Upon joining a new group, this peer group becomes your default peer group for all future functionality (e.g., chatting or file sharing). </font></p> <blockquote> <hr> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>NOTE</b>: All JXTA peers are members of the "NetPeerGroup." The NetPeerGroup is the root of all the peer groups. When starting myJXTA is always in the NetPeerGroup.</font></p> <hr> </blockquote> <p> <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Leave Group</b>: Leave your current peer group, and return to the NetPeerGroup where you can join other groups. </font></p> </blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Help...</b></font></p> <blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>About My JXTA: </b>Display information about the version of myJXTA you are running. </font></p> </blockquote> </blockquote> <P><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B><a name="2.2"></a>2.2 Group Manager</B> </font> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> The top section is used to manage and control your membership within JXTA peergroups. You can search, create, join or leave a peergroup with the help of the Group menu. The <I>Peer Group </I>list displays the peergroups discovered in the JXTA network. By default, your peer joins the NetPeerGroup when myJXTA is started. You can join any peergroups that have been discovered. You do this by selecting the peergroup in the Peer Group list, and selecting the "<I>Join</I>" from the <I>Group </I>menu. </font></p> <P><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">You can search peergroup by entering a text string to search for peergroups. The "*" wildcard can be used as specified <BR> in the Search Groups field. After you type in you search criteria, hit the ENTER key. The list of the Groups that match your search criteria will appear in the Peer Groups list box. </font> <blockquote> <hr> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>NOTE</b>: Functionality on the Application tabs is active for the current peergroup context. </font></p> <hr> </blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">You can create, join or leave a group using the Group Menu. </font></p> <P><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">MyJXTA let's you create two types of peergroups: </font> <UL> <LI><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><I>Public</I> peergroup: Anybody can join the peergroup </font> <LI><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">P<I>rivate </I>Peergroup: Associate a unique password for the group. Only members that know the password can join the group. </font></LI> </UL> <p><font color="#666699" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">T<font color="#000000">he "<I>Create</I>" option of the Group menu pops up a menu for you to select the type of groups you want to create, either public or private. </font></font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><img src="images/creategroup.gif" width="314" height="175"></font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">If you select a private group then you have to enter a unique password for the group. This password has to be known for any peers to join this peergroup. </font></p> <P><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b><a name="2.3"></a>2.3 Application Manager</b> </font> <P><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The middle section is called the Application Manager and controls the current functionality that you are using (Group Chat, Secure Chat, Search or Share content). The default application is Group Chat. You may switch to a different function by clicking on the desired tab or selecting the desired function from the Navigation menu. </font> <P><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">If there is activity within one application while you are currently using a different application (e.g. a chat message is posted while you are searching for content) then the tab of the application with new activity turns red to alert the user.</font> <P><img src="images/redtab.gif" width="600" height="694"> <blockquote> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B>Group Chat</B> </font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The Group Chat application enables you to have a group discussion between all members of a peergroup. Only members of the current peergroup can participate to the group chat. The chat panel shows the current thread of discussion in the chat group. The left user panel shows all the peers that are participating in the discussion. Only the peers that have sent messages since you joined the chat room are shown. The right side panel shows the messages received. </font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><img src="images/group.gif" width="600" height="694"></font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Group Chat is the default application when myJXTA is started.
