The Hong Kong Institute of Education Jockey Club Primary School (HKIEdJCPS) is sponsored by the HKIEd Schools Limited
which is a special arm of the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd). As a major provider in teacher education, the HKIEd plays an
important role in promoting and supporting the advancement of education in Hong Kong. The Institute therefore considers it important to
support the enhancement of the quality of education in Hong Kong by operating an Early Childhood Learning Centre and a Primary
School for the purpose of studying, demonstrating and sharing best practices in learning and teaching.
Conceptualized in 1997 by Professor Ruth Hayhoe, former Director of the HKIEd, with a group of Institute staff, the primary
school was eventually built as a result of a generous donation of approximately 92.74 millions dollars from the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
The Quality Education Fund also provided valuable support to fund the planning process. Dr. Pang King Chee, former Deputy Director
(Quality Assurance and Educational Services) led the Institutes team of planners, with representation from the various Schools and
departments, in planning the construction of the building, pupil intake, staff selection and the many tasks that inevitably befell a new
school.
The school, set up as a government aided whole-day co-educational elementary school, commenced operation in September 2002
with students enrolled in seven classes. By 2007-2008, the school will be in full capacity with eighteen classes with over 600 pupils and
approximately 27 regular full-time teachers. Located at the Tai Po campus of the Hong Kong Institute of Education, the School is
primarily for pupils from Tai Po, but welcomes children from neighbouring communities as well as other parts of the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Area.
