CIDER9 CIDER is a mixed-level circuit and device simulatorthat provides a direct link between technology parametersand circuit performance. A mixed-level circuit and devicesimulator can provide greater simulation accuracy than astand-alone circuit or device simulator by numericallymodeling the critical devices in a circuit. Compact modelscan be used for noncritical devices. CIDER couples the latest version of SPICE3 (version3F.2) to an internal C-based device simulator, DSIM. SPICE3provides circuit analyses, compact models for semiconductordevices, and an interactive user interface. DSIM providesaccurate, one- and two-dimensional numerical device modelsbased on the solution of Poisson's equation, and the elec-tron and hole current-continuity equations. DSIM incor-porates many of the same basic physical models found in thethe Stanford two-dimensional device simulator PISCES. Inputto CIDER consists of a SPICE-like description of the circuitand its compact models, and PISCES-like descriptions of thestructures of numerically modeled devices. As a result,CIDER should seem familiar to designers already accustomedto these two tools. For example, SPICE3F.2 input filesshould run without modification, producing identicalresults. CIDER is based on the mixed-level circuit and devicesimulator CODECS, and is a replacement for this program. The basic algorithms of the two programs are the same. Someof the differences between CIDER and CODECS are describedbelow. The CIDER input format has greater flexibility andallows increased access to physical model parameters. Newphysical models have been added to allow simulation ofstate-of-the-art devices. These include transverse fieldmobility degradation important in scaled-down MOSFETs and apolysilicon model for poly-emitter bipolar transistors.Temperature dependence has been included over the range from-50C to 150C. The numerical models can be used to simulateall the basic types of semiconductor devices: resistors, MOScapacitors, diodes, BJTs, JFETs and MOSFETs. BJTs and JFETscan be modeled with or without a substrate contact. Supporthas been added for the management of device internal states.Post-processing of device states can be performed using theNUTMEG user interface of SPICE3. Previously computed statescan be loaded into the program to provide accurate initialguesses for subsequent analyses. Finally, numerous smallbugs have been discovered and fixed, and the program hasbeen ported to a wider variety of computing platforms.9 October 13, 1992 - 2 - Berkeley tradition calls for the naming of new versionsof programs by affixing a (number, letter, number) tripletto the end of the program name. Under this scheme, CIDERshould instead be named CODECS2A.1. However, tradition hasbeen broken in this case because major incompatibilitiesexist between the two programs and because it was observedthat the acronym CODECS is already used in the analog designcommunity to refer to coder-decoder circuits.9Hardware/Operating System Requirements: The program has beenrun successfully under: (Ultrix 4, RISC), (SunOS 4, Sun4),(AIX 3, RS/6000), (UNIX SVR3, iPSC/860 node). Compatibilitywith other computer systems has not been tested. However, the program is expected to compile on most machines withUNIX, a C compiler and IEEE-754 floating point arithmetic. At least 8MB physical memory is recommended.9Versions Available: UNIX only, available Q1 19939Distribution Media: QIC-120, QIC-150, QIC-320, 8mm (2.2gig), TK50 (DEC tape format), 9-track 1600 bpi, 9-track 6250bpi9Source Code: Yes9Object Code: No9Programming Language: C9Materials/Handling Fee: $150.009Documentation included with the tape:1.
