Rule--Sid9622--Summary:This event is generated when an attempt is made to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) using Spiffit.--Impact:Denial of Service (DoS)--Detailed Information:The comsat daemon can be used on Linux/UNIX based machines to notify users of new mail in their mailboxes (commonly utilized with the biff utility). A DoS attack is possible against the comsat daemon which could be used by a remote attacker to flood the user with mail notification.--Affected Systems:Older Linux/UNIX based distributions using comsat and biff.--Attack Scenarios:An attacker could use the spiffit tool to flood the user with new mail notifications causing the DoS.--Ease of Attack:Simple.
