	Winice Loader Readme file (Beta 4)
	------------------------------------
	
	This utility is a small loader designed to load Winice on Windows
Millennium, without the need of the checked build of io.sys, which is part
of the Millennium DDK (Microsoft has made a simplified version of the DDK
available at http://www.microsoft.com/ddk/debugging/download/WINMEDDK.EXE,
you decide if you go with this loader or the Microsoft/NuMega solution).

	1. Installation
	---------------

	1. Install SoftICE for Windows Millennium normally. Make sure that
winice.exe, winice.dat and siwvid.386 files are present in the Windows root
directory(%WINDIR%). Don't rename winice.exe to anything else, the loader
expects to find "winice.exe". Configure video display and mouse as usual.

	2.Copy the file loader.exe into %WINDIR%\SYSTEM\VMM32\ folder.

	3.Reboot your system.

	4.The loader lets you abort loading SoftICE if you press ESC in time,
	  any other key or a timeout of a few seconds will load SoftICE.

	2. Errors and troubleshooting
	-----------------------------

	The utility relies on the %winbootdir% environment variable, and needs
it to point to the Windows root folder. The Millennium io.sys versions which I
checked all define this variable and correctly initialize it. If the Winice 
loader cannot find it, it will complain about it, but will continue to boot
Windows normally.
	If winice.exe is not found (e.g. SoftICE was uninstalled), the loader
will transparently continue to boot Windows.
	If winice.exe fails execution for whatever reason (such as no XMS
present, insufficient memory...) the user will be prompted by io.sys for
the name of the Windows loader. Just enter at the prompt:

		%WINDIR%\SYSTEM\vmm32.vxd

	This will boot Windows normally.
	
	In the event that your %WINDIR%\system\vmm32\ folder already contains
a loader.exe file, DO NOT overwrite it with our loader. Please write down if
your Windows is a special OEM build, the build number, and send us this info,
attaching your io.sys and loader.exe.
	Since this utility interferes with the boot process of Windows 
Millennium, it is a good idea to have a rescue disk ready. If the system crashes
or does not boot in a reasonable amount of time, boot from floppy and delete
loader.exe. Keep in mind that we are not responsible for any damage this
utility causes to you, your data, your mental sanity or global warming. It
was written for ourselves, but we decided to release it because many crackers
wanted to use Windows Millennium and Winice.
	This utility was tested using Windows Millennium builds 2525 and 3000
and Winice for Windows Millennium 4.0.5 builds 334, 410 and 526. Beyond these
versions there is no guarantee that the loader will work, because certain
things we rely on might change. Yet mail us the build numbers, and we will
fix the utility. Also, please report any anomalies while using Winice loaded
this way.

	The source code is provided for educational purposes only. Distribution
of modified versions is strictly prohibited.
