<a name="1204613"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Flat profiling is performed on hardware targets by testing at regular intervals which code is being executed. This technique is called sampling. The code being executed is identified as being in a function. The results give an estimate of how much time is spent in each function.</font>

<a name="1204615"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">At each sample time, the instruction pointer <span class=Signal>Iptr</span> is tested to discover which function is being executed. The testing may be performed by diagnostic controller hardware. If there is no function found to be running when the test occurs, then the idle count is incremented. The number of times each function is hit gives an estimate of the processor time taken by that function.</font>
