<a name="1205345"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">There are two methods of parameter passing, depending upon whether or not the function involved has a type which includes a prototype.</font>
</p>
<p>
<a name="1205346"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">For a function call, if the function has a type that includes a prototype, then each actual parameter is converted to the type of the corresponding formal parameter, otherwise the default argument promotions are performed on each actual parameter.</font>

<p> <font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><li ><a name="1205349"> </a>An argument of type <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>char</strong></font>, <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>short int</strong></font>, <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>int</strong></font> bit-field, or enumeration type is converted to type <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>int</strong></font> (signed <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>int</strong></font> if this correctly represents the argument, unsigned <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>int</strong></font> otherwise).</font></p>
<p> <font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><li ><a name="1209612"> </a>An argument of type <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>float</strong></font> is converted to type <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>double</strong></font>.</font></p>
<p> <font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><li ><a name="1209614"> </a>Arguments of all other types are unmodified.</font></p>

<a name="1205352"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">For a function definition, if the function type does not include a prototype, then callee narrowing is performed upon each formal parameter: this converts it from its promoted type (as obtained by the default argument promotions) to its declared type. If the function type does include a prototype, then no type conversion is performed.</font>
