<p>
<a name="1204620"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>R</b></font> <font size=2 face=Courier><strong><em>symbol</em></strong></font> option enables one object file to be substituted in place of another in an existing library file, provided both object files were compiled for the same processor type. The command line to perform this substitution must contain the following three elements:</font>

<ul>
<p> <font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><li ><a name="1204621"> </a>a single library file which is to be modified,</font></p>
<p> <font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><li ><a name="1204622"> </a>the <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>R</b></font> <font size=2 face=Courier><strong><em>symbol</em></strong></font> option naming the symbol which defines the object file to be replaced,</font></p>
<p> <font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><li ><a name="1204623"> </a>the name of the object file which is to be swapped into the library.</font></p>
</ul>

<a name="1204624"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Optionally an output file may be specified with the <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>O</b></font> option.</font>
</p>

<a name="1204625"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">If the symbol is found in the named library file then the object file which defines the symbol is replaced with the object file specified on the command line and a new library is created which is either:</font>
</p>
<ul>
<p> <font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><li ><a name="1204626"> </a>written to the specified output file, or,</font></p>
<p> <font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><li ><a name="1207455"> </a>if an output file is not specified then the new library overwrites the original library file.</font></p>

<dt> <a name="1207456"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">In this second case, if the original library file is corrupted during an aborted process then a backup file containing the original library is generated and named: <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>Old.lib</strong></font>.</font>

<a name="1204637"> </a><font size=2 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">This example searches the library <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>mylib.lib</strong></font> for the symbol <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>fred</strong></font>. If <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>fred</strong></font> is found then the object file defining <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>fred</strong></font> is replaced by <font size=2 face=Courier><strong>update.tco</strong></font>.</font>
