<p class="last-para">For the remainder of this chapter, I will introduce three different ways to manage memory with explicit recycling. All of the approaches that I discuss use techniques that fall into the category of indexing schemes, which is to say that they keep track of free and allocated memory using an indexing data structure. What distinguishes the following three techniques is the type of indexing data structure that they use and how they use it. In each case, I will start with an abstract explanation of how the basic mechanism works. Then I will offer a concrete implementation and take it for a test drive. I will end each discussion with an analysis that looks into the benefits and potential disadvantages of each approach.</p>
