<h2 class="first-section-title"><a name="127"></a><a name="ch01lev1sec5"></a>Closing Thoughts</h2><p class="first-para">By now you should understand why memory management requires the operating system and the processor to work closely together. Nevertheless, the roles that the hardware and operating system assume are, without a doubt, complementary.</p>
<p class="para">The processor defines a <i class="emphasis">mechanism</i> for accessing, protecting, and emulating memory. The hardware does, indeed, expect a special set of data structures to be in place, like the GDT and the Page Directory. But these are merely extensions of the mechanism that the processor provides.</p>
<p class="last-para">It is the responsibility of the operating system to make use of the processor's services and mandate <i class="emphasis">policy</i> for using them. In the next <a name="128"></a><a name="IDX-43"></a>chapter, we will see how different operating systems tackle the issue of implementing memory management policies.</p>
