Introduction</H1><P>This is an initial specification of the <SPANCLASS="emphasis"><ICLASS="EMPHASIS">eCos</I></SPAN> Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). The HAL abstractsthe underlying hardware of a processor architecture and/or theplatform to a level sufficient for the eCos kernel to be ported ontothat platform.</P><DIVCLASS="NOTE"><BLOCKQUOTECLASS="NOTE"><P><B>Caveat: </B>This document is an informal description of the HAL capabilities andis not intended to be full documentation, although it may be used as asource for such. It also describes the HAL as it is currentlyimplemented for the architectures targeted in this release. It mostclosely describes the HALs for the MIPS, I386 and PowerPC HALs.
