Notation and Conventions</H1><DIVCLASS="TOC"><DL><DT><B>Table of Contents</B></DT><DT><AHREF="notation-and-conventions.html#GDB-AND-GCC-COMMAND-NOTATION">GDB and GCC Command Notation</A></DT><DT><AHREF="directory-and-file-system-conventions.html">Directory and File System Conventions</A></DT><DT><AHREF="version-conventions.html">Version Conventions</A></DT></DL></DIV><P>Since there are many supported target architectures, notationconventions are used in this manual to avoid repeating instructionsthat are very similar.</P><DIVCLASS="SECT1"><H1CLASS="SECT1"><ANAME="GDB-AND-GCC-COMMAND-NOTATION">GDB and GCC Command Notation</H1><P>Cross-development commands like <BCLASS="COMMAND">gcc</B> and<BCLASS="COMMAND">gdb</B> will be shown with a<TTCLASS="REPLACEABLE"><I>TARGET-</I></TT> prefix. You need to replace<TTCLASS="REPLACEABLE"><I>TARGET-</I></TT> with the correct prefix beforeusing the command. Just using <BCLASS="COMMAND">gcc</B> or<BCLASS="COMMAND">gdb</B> will use the tools for the host, which is not(usually) what you want.</P><P>For example use <BCLASS="COMMAND">arm-elf-gcc</B> and<BCLASS="COMMAND">arm-elf-gdb</B> for ARM, Thumb, and StrongARM targets.Use <BCLASS="COMMAND">xscale-elf-gcc</B> and<BCLASS="COMMAND">xscale-elf-gdb</B> for Intel Xscale targets.Use <BCLASS="COMMAND">i386-elf-gcc</B> and<BCLASS="COMMAND">i386-elf-gdb</B> for IA32 targets. And so on, the exactprefix to use is shown in the documentation for each target.</P><P>Note that some versions of the GCC cross compiler generateexecutable files with the <TTCLASS="FILENAME">.exe</TT> suffix on Windows,but not on Linux.
