Mr. Albert began to study and to care for animals when he was very young.
At the age of seven, he had a zoo in his backyard.
In it, he kept snakes, rats and birds.
When he was only 11, he wrote a letter to Dr. William Rowan, a zoologist.
"I know you study animals," the boy wrote. "Is there any way I can help you with your work?"
A few days later, the zoologist drove up to the boy's home.
What a strange visitor! His car was filled with boxes of crows!
"Are you the boy who wants to study wild animals?" Dr. Rowan asked. Albert nodded.
"All right. Let's go to work," the scientist said.
"We're going to study how crows find their way in the air."
From then on, the boy planned to become a zoologist.
For years he worked hard, both at school and as Dr. Rowan's helper.
Later he worked at different jobs, always saving his money.
At last, Mr. Albert had enough money to buy land for his game farm.
Then came the hard job of clearing land and building animal shelters, without using big machines.
"The land must stay just as it was," Mr. Albert said. "Animals want it that way.
They don't like the smell of machines that use gas and oil."
The most exciting day of Mr. Albert's life was August 1, 1959. On that day he opened the Alberta Game Farm.
Each year since then Mr. Albert has traveled about 150,000 miles looking for new animals.
He is now known everywhere as the friend of wild animals.
